Texture?

I don't do much texturing but want to buy a hopper for the occasional times when i need a small room or something done, i can do it myself and save some time and money waiting for someone else to come and texture. Can anyone recommend a good hopper? I don't want to spend a ton of money since i won't be using this alot but i don't want some peice of junk that's going to give horrible results. thanks for any suggestions on this

Re: Texture?

I bought a hopper at Home Depot for $135 and a used compressor at a pawn shop for $100 and I was ready to go. I know the drywall suppliers have a texture machine here for about $1000, but what I have seems to work really well. I had to look around a bit for the compressor, because it has to be a high cfm to work for texture, most of the cheaper compressors out there are only meant to run nail guns.

Re: Texture?

You can pick one up at any home center. They work. Your compressor should be ok but you might need a couple things.

If the hopper gun doesn't have an air-shut off valve, add one at the hopper gun.

Keep your pressure low, about 15#. Don't let the hopper gun overrun the compressor (drop pressure below your setting).

Practice on some sheets that aren't installed prior to doing this for real. A consistent even texture is important. This takes practice. Mud needs the correct consistency. Nozzle size is important, test, test, test.

Practice on knock down. Needs to be done when the mud is semi-wet/dry. To early will make a mess, to late won't work.

Re: Texture?

Thanks raven and thom for the help. Brockster, i usually do hire this out for the bigger jobs but if i have a small room to do or just one wall it makes alot more sense for me to do this rather than wait for someone and overpay cause it's only one room. I didn't ask you how to do it like on a diy forum, only asked for opinions on tools like alot of people do on here. Thanks for your time to type in that response.
