Question

Tape And Mudding Over OSB?

I Have a Homeowner who does not want to spend On sheetrocking his 2nd floor bedrooms.

There is OSB on the walls and cieling.

The problem I see is with heat and cooling, Seems the mud will crack and or Peel off.
Has anyone out there ever seen or done anything like this?
If it is OK, is there a product Besides All purpose, Maybe one that has elasticity in it which would work better?
Any and all comments, much apreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Perry Potash

Re: Tape And Mudding Over OSB?

I agree, But would like to hear at least a couple more Pros who skim coat, so I can at least show this guy what has been said about his Idea.

There may be a product, or add mix which makes it possible, looking at all options.
I will suggest 1/4" over the Osb, But want to hear all views , maybe someone out there has experimented.

Thanks,

Perry.

I think its a bad deal, wood will expand and contract, if you tape the joints they will always crack also OSB tends to start separating when wet.

1/4 " will save you time and call backs, it will probably be cheaper in the long run for the H/O.

Re: Tape And Mudding Over OSB?

I've done it in a garage. Bad idea. The pieces in the OSB flake off. More like curl up. Then when you go to flick them off, you have more mess. Great fun!! Won't work very good. I have seen a painter prime with an oil base primer and paint. Looked good for a garage, but not nice for a living area.

Thanks for your input Guys,
Just spoke w/ The Homeowner, and he agreed to 1/4" rock on the place.
I apreciate your experience.
