Stupid Tape!

Hey guys, I hung and taped 14 sheets of 3/8 drywall over some pretty ratty old plaster a couple weeks ago. Well I go back tonight to get some trim measurements, and find all the butt joints with barely visible hairline cracks in the center of the tape! I am figuring it was the tape I used. Now don't laugh to hard guys, but I tried that self stick paper mesh tape for the first time thinking it would be quicker and easier. So tonight on the freshly painted walls I cut the tape out of the butts and retaped with regular paper tape. You guys ever use that self stick paper tape or heard of any trouble with it?

P.S. The board is glued and screwed real tight.

Re: Stupid Tape!

I tried it once, same thing happened. Never used it again, I stick with whats "tried and true." I don't even use the fiberglass tape, seen the same thing happen too many times (hairline cracks and joints) after a couple years or so on jobs taht someone else did that I got hired to go back and fix.

Re: Stupid Tape!

It is a must to use Fast set drywall mud with any of the self sticking tape. Best to use the brown bag durabond. Not the easy sand. The easy sand will work, just not quite as good.

Yup fast set is a must. I've put on miles of mesh using fast set for first coat without any problems. You will find that if you get your first coat pretty good, you will only need one coat of finish to get a perfect job because there's virtually no shrinkage with fast set and mesh covers better than paper. I always use 90 minute but that could be down to the fact that there aren't any other fast setting compounds available here...

Tip: Don't do corners with mesh.

Re: Stupid Tape!

It can't be because you hung "drywall over some pretty ratty old plaster"? I would think that an uneven surface behind the drywall could be a problem?

Re: Stupid Tape!

Self stick paper is junk. Mesh is great, but only if used with setting mud.

Not likely.
You can go over flat, new construction and if the right product isn't used, you are in trouble. The directions on all self adhesive tape calls for setting type mud or failure is inevitable. In other words, it is a for sure crack waiting to happen.

The old plaster was pretty ratty, but by that I mean just a bunch on chunks falling off or missing and the old paint was all peeling off in spots. It would have been to much work to patch all the spots and skim. But the walls were pretty flat and the drywall is glued and screwed securly.

I used 2 1/2" DW screws. The old plaster was about 7/8" thick at the thickest places. With six screws across at each stud. Thats what the inspectors want around here, a couple of townships acctually just started drywall inspections before taping. The sheets are all layed down with each butt seamed on a stud.

Yep, you used the right size screws. I figured you did but I just had to ask to be sure. We also have drywall/screw inspections here.
