Stinky Drywall...
Not the chinese stuff, but one days worth of 54" that was let out with "formented" starch from a plant in Wyoming. Smells like rotting vomit, seriously. The rep was really good about the problem, but we have to replace about 1200' in 2 separate houses,(and throw out about 1500' of "new" drywall) It took a bit to find the problem, but yep, it's the 54". Anyone else with this issue, dated 05 18 09?? The smell is just sooooo rank.... it can't be missed. Does the chinese stuff smell this bad too??

Georgia Pacific...
Like I said, the rep was great, and acknowledged the problem right away. GP will be compensating us completely for the replacement costs, but I can't be the only guy with this problem, can I (Northern Alberta)? From what I understand, anything manufactured on this day could be "stinky", to say the least....

Re: Stinky Drywall...
So, house #1 had 3 single sheets of 54. We caught the smell early on, but it was a complete reno (ALL the old drywall removed), and presumed it was cat p$ss, gopher in the wall ,or something weird like that. The boys move to house #2, and INSTANTLY recognize the stink when they hit the 54". I'm thinkin that's ONE MEAN CAT to kill a whole stack of drywall, but we'd better make some phone calls just in case! The rep asked if it smelled like rotten vomit, and we all said YES... Off it comes.. Maybe VERMENTED?

Re: Stinky Drywall...
I saw something on the news here about two weeks ago. It said that Tough Rock by Georgia pacific was having some of the same issues as the Chinese drywall. And when they zoomed in on the drywall label it said made in Canada (possily Alberta If I'm not mistaken). I take all news story with a grain of salt. But I did go to the news channels website after I saw that story, and couldn't find anything on it. I'll go look again since you have brought this up. We are doing a few houses in a neihborhood where Chinese drywall was used (one million dollar+ homes). It smells like rotten eggs or sulfur water.

I hope this Georgia Pacific thing is not a very big issue.

Re: Stinky Drywall...
doesn't the vomitboard give off an odor as its being installed? or does it 'go off" sometime afterward?

Re: Stinky Drywall...
Not much of a smell, till you cut into the core. The rep said it came from a Wyoming plant, as none of the Canadian plant manufacture the 54". We only had 1 single bad lift stamped 05 18 09 WY1 MB3 08:04. Of course when we knew what the source was, it was quite obvious, but initially we were looking everywhere BUT the drywall.
Oh, and the house sat closed up since friday, and was it SWEET smellin' this morning, lol! I have to take his word that it WASN'T the chinese special rock. ![]() And it WAS the Toughrock label Last edited by DeanG; 08-06-2009 at 12:38 AM. |

Re: Stinky Drywall...
vomit board doesn't give off unless you cut into it.... I had that happen twice in California. I later learned GP bought some crap from overseas as a fill on the boards. since then, they've discontinued that particular fill.

Re: Stinky Drywall...
We did a few houses about five years ago the mud smelled like cat piss when it was wet. Not when it dried. We had to get the lot #'s off the cans and trace it down at the other homes we were doing for a few weeks after that. They screwed up something in the mix or all the guys at the plant were pissed about something.

Re: Stinky Drywall...
But don't you generally cut into the core as you are installing it? Is there something I am missing here? One touch with the rotozip should send the crew fleeing in disgust. Unless your crews smell worse then the vomitboard? Personal hygiene perhaps?

Re: Stinky Drywall...
Ok, so we got another lift (43 sheets) of sweet smelling stuff again! The boys recognized it again right away, but the house is loaded, windows back in, and whoops!! Deja vu.
This just isn't fun anymore... |
