Stilts Part 2

So i've never used them before. Im very agile.. if that matters. I'm thinking about using them to mud/texture a celing. I guess what im asking is what's the learning curve like... will i be all over the place.. or should i be able to pick it up pretty quick? Also any tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated. I would think to set up an area where i can sit down as to remove them.. One last thing should i walk on the hardwood floors directly.. then just clean up when im done??.... I would think drop cloths would be very slippery.. Thanks so much

Re: Stilts Part 2

start with stilts on low..walk along the walls or spot nails...in a new garage with nothing at all in the way.
just like riding a bike i say.....after a week i was a pro at it.
than raise them all the way up......again a cleaned out garage.....walk along the walls and spot nails or something..... i say 1 month and its all good. Here's a simple technique to practice..OFF STILTS.1) Stand normal. 2) raise your arms above your head 3) now can you slowly drop to your knees with hands still in the air??
Same principle if you start to fall on stilts only it takes a little more strength...I used to be a powerlifter so me for it's not that hard. If you start to fall don't panic.....that's the best advice I can give..and throw whatever is in your hand unless you wanna eat it....lol

Yes.....keep that in mind when falling. If you panic and start running to try to catch yourself.....it's too unpredictable. If you feel like you're about to fall......just stop and gently control the fall. Unfortunately though.....the odds are against you. As any drywaller will tell you........you are gonna fall sooner or later. I won't end this with a good luck ((I don't wanna jinx ya))

Re: Stilts Part 2

Should i use any type of floor coverings?? drop, rozin paper etc...??? I'm assuming that drop cloths would make it easier to lose your balance..or snag the cloth... what do you think??

No coverings! Slippery as hell. Red rosin paper might be ok if taped down well. If any one has stepped in a big turd of mud on a concrete floor on 8 holes, I would think they would tell you the same. Proceed with caution. Falling on your knees off of high stilts will get you surgery, Im guessing. Did a job recently where I sent my guy over by himself and the HO had tarps everywhere. 10' ceilings to be redone and the tarps were over carpet a bed a dresser. Danger! Refuse stuff like that. My .02
