Spraying Knockdown?

hey guys, I have a small knock down texture job. I am not experienced, I have a buddy that was supposed to do it, and now he has backed out because he landed a big job(errrr), but it creates a problem for me. I am very skilled with a trowel, but the spraying is what I'm not experienced with. Can you guys lend a hand?

What is the mixture?

What do I need to get to spray this job I know a hopper gun, can i rent one, if so which one should I get for a light knockdown.

What PSI do i need to use for the spray?

Another other tips would be very appreciated

Thanks alots guys

It's pretty much impossible for any of us to "tell" you hoe to do it well enough that you can run out tomorrow and do a job worthy of being paid for. That is why you have 15 views and no answer. It would be unfair to your customer for you to learn on his/her house.

Well said.

I ll add also if you are going to try - just go rent a texture sprayer and practise on some scrap drywall and show the HO the pieces of what you can do before you make a costly mistake.

As long as you are going to take the time to learn, as opposed to just calling another pro from the yellow pages, go ahead and buy the tools.

They come with instructions, but it really is a matter of experimentation to find what works for you and all your variables.

So you will need to spend time practicing and the the rental charges will add up to more than the purchase price.

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

I remember my first texture...what a mess! To low of air pressure plus the mud was to think made for more of a mess on myself and the floor than on the wall, it looked horrible. The good news is the learning curve is quick.

Practice first, not just on scrap but a whole wall. lean 4 sheets up and use them, sure its $35 but what will an unhappy customer cost you?

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

Listen guys, I am not saying I can just pick this thing up and do a great job, I know that it is a masterful trade. I am a professional tile installer, and I would laugh at anyone who said "well I'll just try it myself", and I have heard people say and do that and the result is aweful.

I do however have some of the skills to be able to complete this job, I am very good with a trowel i know how to use them, I know the feel, I know how to use the corners and not dig, try mudding a shower pan you will see what I mean, it kinda runs hand and hand.

my buddy backing out really bums me out, I would just call someone else, but right now people are so desperate for work, and I don't terust them to do work on my job, I am an absolute perfectionist, and I will spray and scrape off as many times as I need to in order to get a well looking job done.

Should I not try it at all???, also I hear the mix is the biggest problem for someone who does not know it. Is there anything I should know, I know with thinset there are measured ways of adding water to get it right, and I could give someone the correct amount of water to put in it to get a mix, I might not sue thier mix myself, but it would be better then them just adding until theyy "thought" it was ok.

Thanks alot guys, and I AM NOT TRYING TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM YOUR TRADE....as I said I know there is a science to it, and this is why I am afriad of trying it.

Fair enough. I'll try and help. Mix the joint compound to the consistency of yogurt. Now is this on new drywall or on a painted surface? Ceilings or walls?

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

I don't think anyone is saying don't do it, I for one think you should how can learnning another trade be bad? just be paitent and don't think you will nock out the job as fast as a professional crew, but with attention to detail you can get the same results. Sir Mixalot is correct yogurt, I would say yogurt that pours. you can find lots of videos via you tube to see what the consistancy should look like.

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

Thanks alot guys, there is about 70 sq. ft of ceiling, and about 75 sq ft of walls, the walls used to be wall papered I took that off, and one layer of contact paper. There is still one layer of contact paper that i am un-able to get off. So it's a small job, if it were big I would not try it at all. Has anyone ever tried the knockdown stuff in a can by Garduss or whoever it is. I have heard about it a couple of times for small jobs. Is that junk, or would it work?

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

You could buy a hopper and compressor for what you would spend in Knockdown in a can for that job. A can is good for alot smaller stuff than what you are doing. And I still prefer to use a hopper on the small stuff.

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

What would this job cost if I were to hire someone? Reason I'm asking is because I'm not sure if my buddy gave me a deal, or what. So if I were to just hire someone ehich I might do, because I'm not sure what I'm getting into. What should I look for in price? Thanks again guys

Re: Spraying Knockdown?

No need for a compressor and hopper for this small job. Get the Wagner and stop waisting money on small cans. It works way better and after 8 cans it's paid for.

Forget the Wagner. Get the:
Marshalltown Enforcer Portable Texture Sprayer
The Enforcer is an extreme innovation in drywall texture spraying. Get into the tighest areas, and spray jobs from patches to rooms in minutes. The 2.5 gallon tank is pressurized by virtually any small compressor, and fits comfortably on your back. One air hose from the compressor does all the work - pressurizes tank, and provides atomization air for the gun.
  • Easier To Fill than Hopper Gun - Can Fill with Loading Pump!
  • Sprays knockdown, popcorn, orange peel, and splatter textures
  • Tank is Self Cleaning, and System is Easy Flush
  • Empty Unit Weight of 15lbs is Well Supported by Backpack
