Smart Sander

Have any of you guys used a Smart Sander? You can do a google search. They look pretty good for a dustless sanding system. Tell me what you think.

Re: Smart Sander

I googled and it looks to be a vacuum utilized dustless sanding system. I've used a 5hp (vacuum) hand sander at a big commercial (YVR) job aswell as an uptight homeowner's job and it worked well, the dust was virtually elliminated.

Re: Smart Sander

The point my friend is collecting a paycheck. I worked at the airport for a week by the hour when I was slow. It was operational and I can see how they wouldn't want the travellers walking through the dust and the homeowner job, well let's just say paid well

I asked the guy just how smart it really is... But he said it won't sand a house by itself. So, I don't think it is very smart. But I do like the sounds of it. I like the Porter Cable sander and need to use a hand sander also. Homeowners are quite happy with less dust come sand day. Painters are much happier and the job is much better without the dust on the wall.

Re: Smart Sander

i'll rephrase that. I don't see the point of using it WITH a Porter Cable sander. If you have a decent Vacuum to collect the dust, (I personally use a Hilti VCU 40), why filter the dust again? If you collect the dust before it goes in the hoover, what the **** is the hoover doing. And how cumbersome is it wearing it on your waist. A twat must have thought it up.

Re: Smart Sander

I wouldn't wear it on my waist, but on the vac would be fine. If you can get several houses out of a bag it will, in a sense "pay for itself". I am not a believer in things paying for themselves, if you know what I mean...
You can dump the dust out on the ground out of the filter easier than the bag.

Re: Smart Sander

I used a plastic $20 "vacuum hand sander kit" with mesh paper attached to a 5hp shop vac and it worked quite well

Re: Smart Sander

It looks like you would have to sand quite slowly in order to keep it from clogging up the tube?

Re: Smart Sander

Reminds me of the craftsman oribital sander my father bought a couple of decades ago from sears. It hooks up to a shop-vac and the suction causes the sanding pad to vibrate and it then sucks up the dust.

I looked all over for one a couple of years ago and couldn't find one. I asked my dad where he got it and next thing I know he shows up at my house a few days later with the sander.

It still works great.
