Small Repairs....how Do You Do Them? :)

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. Had a quick look around and am hoping you can help me out.

Why is it that sometimes when doing a small nail drywall repair I end up with a smooth shiney spot after painting and other times I wouldn't know there had been a repair there at all.

I feather everything out, sand, and wiz my primer on to add texture to the spot before painting.

I would love to read some step by step processes that you do.

Thanks
Flikka

If you are patching a hole on a previously painted wall you will get flashing (eggshell or velvet paint finishes have a slight gloss to them, with every additional coat, you add to the gloss). I find that the patch area is usually more dull and where you blend in over existing paint tends to be more glossy. Hard to avoid that. As far as your experiences when you didn't notice the difference in gloss, I'm guessing the paint finish was flat and wouldn't show a difference nearly as much. Just my experience ..

A common cause for me is multiple sprayed surfaces. The wall surface becomes dimpled or orange peeled after a few spray jobs and repairs will be level and stick out like a sore thumb. I skimcoat the entire wall and bring everything back level.

Thank-you,

After talking with some painters yesterday we came to the same conclusion. Don't use Dap. It seems to be a common problem amongst the painters I talked with. While it's nice to see when it's dry, it does not always hold the paint well even after priming. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. And while using a flat paint would be the obvious fixer (as it hides so much) it can't be used in every application. Depth of colour may be one reason as well and in this instance black was being applied.

Thanks again,
Flikka
