Slowing Economy And What Customers Want To Pay

I have a little story i thought you guys and gals should know..
I will keep it small.

In early Oct 08 we were contacted by a H/O who has been building this huge house for the past 2 years. The home is in plain view for thousands of people everyday on a very busy street.
The H/O is that kind of person who hires the cheapest framers, plumbers, etc...but after getting burned by the framers, and taking 2 years to get up to drywall, he finally gives in and gets us to do the job. I am the type of person who knows how much i can get for the job, and will not budge to far from that price.
Anyways, it takes us 2 months to finally board the house...not straight 2 months, but in reallity 1.5 weeks. Man that framing needed a lot of fixing before we could cover. Well we were to have our taper go in and start the week before christmas, but he was not quiet complete his last job...so we waited until the new year to start...mean while the H/O got someone else in there to start taping on Dec 23. This guy worked through christmas, and did not stop untill Jan 18. The H/O got the bill of $21000.00 for the taping, which is higher than what we quoted him of 18000.00 so the H/O contacts me and wants me to subtract 3000.00 from my final invoice amount so that he can give that to the other taper, and then he will remain on budget...YEA RIGHT!!!!
So i discused it with him in a civil manner, and he wanted to pay me only 3500.00 of the 6500 that was the final invoice amount....(I took a draw well in advance for 90% once the boarding was complete)...a couple of days pass, i call the H/O and say sure write a check and drop it off today...he has it there in less than 30 min...so i liened the property for the remainder...man was he upset...
I told him that i always get my money....he hung up on me.

with the trying times, we are finding that more and more contractors are getting into contracts...i think that is were we are heading as well..
does anyone else use them, and is it possible to view.

Thanks
Jay

That is unbeleivable that the HO hires someone else and expects you to pay the difference.

If it was $3,000 cheaper would he have added that to your check?

after 2 years why was he in such a hurry?

I am glad you liened his property.

He says it was costing him to much money to have it sit there....the house is over hight, and it had to be signed off by the neighbors, the house was designed for a sunken lot...this lot is flat, framers did not pick up on that.

So because his framers screw up and he waits 2 years to get the drywall hung, he gets impatient with you around christmas and expects you to pay for another contractor who chose to work through the holidays???

Where I live even if the neighbors signed off on the house being to high, it wouldn't matter, the owner would have to reframe the roof to get it lower.

Don't you love Owner/Builders??

I love when I hear jerkoffs talking about how easy it is to be a GC.

Do you own a gun? Better lock the trigger and hide the key from yourself. It would be hard to control oneself from using it on that GC. Interesting what they expect from us(the drywallers). Sounds like you handled yourself professionally. Hard to do in that situation.
