Question

Shop Vac W/Porter Cable 7800

Hey now,
So I recenty purchased a Porter Cable 7800 and will be starting a project for it. I am trying to find out what is the best procedure for keeping the dust at bay? I have a rigid 16 gallon that I will be using with it. I have searched the old posts but no luck on how I should set it up for the bagging system to keep the dust down. I know P.C. makes a vac for it but it 250 clams.
Thanks, Norm

The vac that comes with it works fine. You get what you pay for. A rigid vac is of no use for anything.

Use the Porter Cable vac and use the bags with it, if you don't you will have a mess.

There is also 'dustless' drywall mud, I use it on remodels and it helps with dust control, it tends to fall and not get as much of it airborn.

Last time I bought some from Gator Gypsum, the guys pulling the order didn't know what it was either, I think whore depot has it too.

It really isn't dustless, but it does help quite a bit with dust control.

USG Dustless Joint Compound

For many builders and remodelers — especially remodelers working in an occupied home — drywall dust is basically the bane of our existence. You sand it, and it goes everywhere — in your teeth, in your customer's closets, even into the HVAC filters.

USG heard our lamentations and developed a new formulation for its Sheetrock brand joint compound. It has a unique quality that binds dust particles together into heavier clumps, enabling them to fall to the floor instead of seeking out the sock drawer. The company specifies the mix is ideal for all types of remodeling products. It weighs up to 35 percent less than conventional compounds, which USG says makes handling and application "quick and simple." (I've sanded a dump truck load of compound in my career; I'll give 'em "quicker.")

USG adds that the some builders are realizing a 30 percent to 50 percent savings in compound consumption. The material is low-shrinkage, has excellent adhesion and provides good crack resistance. What's more, when mudding metal such as corner bead, it takes two coats instead of three, USG says.
No dust plus a saved step on the outside corners. Now that's a sweet mix.

Many here may tend to disagree with you on this perspective.

I prefer the Craftsmans. Suck like "The Garden Hose Girl"!

They have bags for them as well.

Norrrrrrrrm,

Your Rigid should work just fine.
I use a 14 gal. Shop-Vac for my PC. And can pick up bags at any hardware store. If you have the PC vac, you have to use their bags.

P.S. Make sure you have the plastic tubing inside the tank to slide the bag over.

Thanks guys,
I do not have the PC vac, just the wand. As far as bags needed where can I get them? I tried at HD a while ago and as usual the guy had no idea. Mudd, what store and what brand bag did you use? Details would be handy. Also, what tube is needed?
Thanks

buy regular black tube light weight , $29.00 home depot - don't buy rigid orange tube ,its too heavy when you are sanding .
I use rigid and works great with PC

Re: Shop Vac W/Porter Cable 7800

As far as hoses go, are you talking about a standard vac hose? The 7800 came with a 13' hose That fits the hole of the vac. Maybe I am missing something. What tube goes in the vac and then into the bag? I am assuming the bag used is a filter bag? If so where are purchased? Sorry just a little vague on what is needed. idon't want to run all over town and I just don't want dust everywhere. Thanks

Your hose will fit, be sure to get the bags that fit your vac, and your set.

We also use what we call a "pizza" filter, (cuase its a round --nylon?,cloth looking thingy) The filter goes over the sponge filter on your vac's moter, just slip the black plastic ring off your moter leaving the sponge on it,, put the pizza over it and slip the ring back down on it.

I'm not sure how the Rigid is set up. Will Shop-Vac bags work or does Rigid have a bag just for their vacs?
What do you use Coppa23?

Re: Shop Vac W/Porter Cable 7800

Is there any powered drywall sander for $200 or less that is worth a *****? I took on the installation and finishing sheetrock (not one of my more developed trades, probably wont do it again) for a 1200 sq ft apartment, Its me and one other guy, I have a bad shoulder, pole sanding is out.

I found one on the internet that is vacuum powered, $129. Looks a little cheezy, but who knows.

See if you can rent a porter cable. I know Home Crappo rents them.

The one here doesnt but I'll check some rental places, theres a chance I'll be doing the drywall on a 700 sq ft basement also so I was thinking maybe I should just buy something but I'm not down with getting some crappy tool.

The last time I looked at the Rigid vacuums I noticed you can't attach a bag to it. Not sure with the new one though...

If you can't find filter bags, run another hose from your exhaust out a window. It's what we did before bags.

The best I've seen is the Porter Cable with a FEIN vac http://www.feinus.com/p/NEWdustfree/vacmain.htm hooked up to it. I'm pretty sure you need a HEPA filter to make the sander really be dust free.
Our drywall sub came in with this setup and sanded three rooms in an hour and there was NO dust...I mean none!!! Awesome job
