Shiny Corner??

I had a contractor ask me to put a shiny corner in an area. He has some round duct running in an area and doesn't want to put up framing. He says it will take up too much room. So he said just put up a "shiny corner". I'm guessing that is some metal on the back of the rock to make the outside corner somewhat stable. Do any of you guys know?

Sounds like you're working for a hack handyman. That said, I've seen guys support some chases, low profile style, with the creative use of black iron lather's channel.

This guy is building his own house, so he is his own general. Cutting corners. Kinda dumb, if you ask me.

Sounds like you need to educate him to the fact that drywallers hang and finish drywall. Framers frame.

Sounds like he's talking about "Light Gage Metal Framing" to me.

Except for the fact that this is one of those "homeowner as general contractor" deals. He's probably thinking someone could use corner bead on the inside to build a chase.

Re: Shiny Corner??

I'm not familiar with core board angle. I guess L trim would work, wouldn't it? Have you ever done that? We have screwed to flat duct before. (In a pinch)

Re: Shiny Corner??

Usually it's needed cause the architect didn't plan the run for heating or backing was needed at the ceiling. Core board angle is just a thicker version of the L trim. You can find the L at your drywall supplier or HD for that matter. Just screw it in to something solid.

Thank you! I'll probably use some L bead. I have some in the shop.

If somene gives you instruction you don't understand, ASK THEM to explain it. Don't be afraid to "look dumb", just ask.

Re: Shiny Corner??

The product he is referring to is shiny 90. It is light gauge metal framing material. You can get it in 25 ga for the application you are explaining. Say if you need to cover a duct running against a wall you could put the shiny 90 on the ceiling , cut your rip, and screw a piece of shiny 90 onto that and then your rip to the shiny 90 on the ceiling. Then you can put shiny 90 on the wall, cut another rip and attach to the piece hanging down from the ceiling and to the wall. We call it a drywall soffitt.

I don't mind doing that, and I did, but he had been told by his HVAC man and didn't know what it was, so I asked you guys . And you guys know what it is. So again Thank you . I appreciate all of the replies. Good source.
Now I can call my supplier and tell them what I want and they will likely know what I am talking about. Easy as pie...

This is exactly the application I am asked to do. Thank You!! You're a good man T8per. Assuming you are a man. Kinda presumptuous on my part. Anyway, Thank you!
