All we use is usg all purpose and plus 3. All purpose for texture on lids for it dries whiter. Plus 3 if mixed right for joints works the best for us. We've tried other but this seems to work the best for us so we dont change anything.

The unaggregated bag texture dries much more evenly and will give you a more consistent shmear pattern. I used to spray with regular box mud until I tried the unaggregated one day and was amazed at the difference.
1 bag=7 plus gallons...
It is also best to mix it the day before and make sure you use your spatula to scrape way down on the sides and mix it well. It's a little more work but in the end it's well worth the effort.

We found the bag texture less expensive than the box mud (saved $14 on an average house or $2800 a year if we did 200 houses that year). As a side note, we had an issue with a texture man not getting good coverage on his acoustic (popcorn) spray and had him mix one bag of unaggregated in it for coverage.

We tried box mud only because the texture guy was mixing in to much air into the mix with bag mud. Box mud required less mixing, it seemed. We told him to leave the paddle in the mix and not beat air into it. Went back to bag mud!
