Sand Textured Plaster
Any old timers or students thereof who know the details on how to produce the textured ceilings often used on old churches where the whitecoat has a very very fine sand in it and a slightly swirled appearance?
Anyone know what exact sand product was used? It seems to be far finer than anything currently available? Was the sand mixed into the whitecoat or applied after? Was standard application to trowel on? Any other insight appreciated. Thank you in advance. |

PAint brush and fine sand you get at the paint store. That is how I match my patches. Paint the swirl or clam shell what ever the og finish was.

Re: Sand Textured Plaster
Kal Kote thin coat plaster matches the old. Just float it with the sponge to match the old. Each kind of sponge will give you a different finish. Find the one that matches. More consistent than the paint additive. The paint works great for a patch, but time consuming for a whole ceiling or house.

kal kote texture is a bag mix and it has the sand in it. Just mix with water, trowel on and sponge float it to match.

Re: Sand Textured Plaster
If Kal-Kote is not available. You can also mix sand and joint compound. Thin it down with primer and a little water. Then spray it on with an hopper. Also, after it is sparyed on you can put whatever swirls/brush strokes in it to match the existing walls .

Re: Sand Textured Plaster
Sir Mixalot, Do you have a ratio of mud to sand to primer. Or do you just do like I have too many times, just pour a little of this and that to taste good?

Re: Sand Textured Plaster
When you guys say sand what kind of sand are you talking? The sand they used is light years finer than anything I've come across and doesn't blend at all with existing.

Re: Sand Textured Plaster
Silica sand is pretty fine. We get it at the lumber yard. Comes in a ninety pound bag. Have you tried silica sand?
You might have to add a little retarder to the plaster to make the sand stick to each other to make it appear larger. Another thought is use the base coat and let it set up a little then float it. It has the masons sand in it. More like river sand. The brown stuff. It will float a little heavier, but turns the finish plaster kinda brown. Last edited by Tim0282; 12-07-2008 at 09:05 PM.
