Respray

When scraping old cieling texture (popcorn) ,what kind of procedures do some of you use?this is about a 2500sq ft house ,going to fog/knockdown.
I first polyed all walls and floor, then scraped the ceilings ,wetting them down first.
Now I'm going to roll the poly up off the floor and put down new stuff to get some of the mess out of there.
Next I'll put down drop cloth on the tile floors and a layer of poly on that ,luckily the carpet is gone in most of the house .
Then touch up bad areas and we'll spray Kilz paint to seal the old sheetrock .Then fog it and knockdown.
I'm sure this has been dicussed before ,just wondered if anyone else cleans up after the scraping or just plows through it?

Re: Respray

Normally you will need to skim the top side of the corners since they prolly didn't pump them and any place you went through the paper or badly scuffed it you will need to coat it with dura bond. Also, they original taper may have only coated the seams just once so check to see if there hollow.
Not sure what "fog it" means...

After putting the plastic on the floor, I go ahead and put a layer of the lighter plastic that goes on the walls (.31 mil) on top of the first layer of heavier floor plastic. (I just tack it down @ the corners w/ tape.) Then, when I'm finished scraping off the popcorn. I pull up the the layer of plastic on top and have a clean layer undrneath.

Does spraying with a light primer help spraying knockdown? We prime after, but wondering if before helps.

Re: Respray

Spraying with primer before texture helps the newly textured areas dry evenly if it was applied over some areas that were painted and others where patchwork has been done. Probably helps adhesion a bit, too.

When I scrape ceilings I try to catch the scrapings in a trash can lid as I go to avoid making a huge mess on the floor.

On an Popcorn Removal the surface is left very dusty, so the primer seals it so the texture doesn't roll when you knock it down.
It also helps with consistency of the Knockdown. Being that the way the material knocks down is detremined by the surface in which it is applied to. (It knocks down differently on the joints than on the paper of the drywall.)

Learned something new today, thanks!

Mixalot, do you use the "Unaggregated" powdered texture for your knock-down? I haven't had the problem of the texture rolling and I'm just wondering if it's because I don't use regular mudd for knock-down?

Re: Respray

we use non-aggregate mix for fog and knockdown ,we just mix it thinner and use a differant gun to spray it for fog, it's thicker than primer and helps even out the surface as well as gives the knockdown a better drying suface as opposed to the differance of paper and mud joints when knocking down.
I did plan on touching a bit before sealing it with kilz.

Re: Respray

Mudbucket,

When you say "Fog" don't you mean apply a light spray of mud and then knock that down as opposed to SirMixAlot's interpretation that you meant a light spray of primer?

To the restL

The "correct" way to texture is to prime before texturing to achieve an even absorption so when you knock down they all smear the same. Many who do quick and dirty or orange peel, will texture first and then prime.

We wet scraped it ,and thats a first for me ,been in drywall for 20 years and never done it that way before, sure cuts down on the dust and is a lot easier to scrape.

Re: Respray

Don't wet the ceiling, put a mask (a good one) or respirator on and fog it on the first day, knock it down the second and be gone. Use Bin after you scrape the ceiling, have lunch, and fog. A good heavy fog will cover most "scratches" and the knockdown will do the rest.

Yes when I say fog it's a coat of mud that gives nice even coverage on the whole ceiling ,let it dry completely and spray knockdown on that.
Usually that can be left as finished or can be painted .

Re: Respray

great post guys.. have a few questions of my own..

1. when spraying knockdown, i am using approx 50 psi with a hopper gun. my knockdown seems a bit small for my liking. I have tired to think i need to lower the psi, and my texture is the consistancy of ...pancanke batter. if that helps.

Re: Respray

Try lower air pressure or a bigger opening on the spray tip.
