Removing Screws After Hanging?

I've heard some guys have started removing drywall screws after the boards are hung and the construction adhesive has set up. True?

I don't doubt someone has done that. I'm pretty sure people could argue for a few days on how smart or stupid it is.

Pretty sure Blacktop has been rumoured to pull screws...

I never trusted the glue until I realized every time I encounter it in demo it's still adhered strong. Like pain in the arse to remove strong.

Re: Removing Screws After Hanging?

Never heard of it. While there's a fair chance it could work out okay, I seriously doubt there'd be any economic advantage to it vs the chance of a random screw pop.

Re: Removing Screws After Hanging?

So I pay someone to install the screws, then I pay them to remove the screws.

Sounds like I'm getting screwed.

The key is to install it with as few a screws as possible.

Re: Removing Screws After Hanging?

I think this is more common than guys here think, at least in certain regions on higher end stuff. But only the field screws are getting removed. I think one on my hanging crew could remove the field screws on 100 sheets in an hour.

Re: Removing Screws After Hanging?

And on the other hand, I've heard of inspectors that insist on a certain number of field screws. We don't normally get an inspection for drywall, but it does happen in some places.

Re: Removing Screws After Hanging?

Up grade the stud lumber to one that holds 99.99% of dry wall screws properly installed???? cheaper than unscrewing...?

Use the proper size, length, and # of threads screw(s)

Keep framing lumber covered till use(Avoid massive humidity swings during construction with use of temporary HVAC?)

If you are anal enough to remove say field screws, wouldn't you use a large (non-marking) washer to clamp the glue better with fewer fasteners?

Is someone misguided idea to get a flatter wall with wavy studs, "let the glue shim the recessed studs?"

This sounds like a giant waste of time... and a pretty terrible idea as well.

Why's it a bad idea? I like to remove my clamps after glue ups.

I have seen enough drywall glue that has let go that I would never consider such a thing. Granted, on the jobs where you need to remove the drywall, the glue is stuck like nothing has stuck before.

Besides, there are still holes to mud so I don't even understand why a person would do it.

Can’t get screw pops if there are no screws.

Makes more sense to me to just set your screws properly.
