Removing Popcorn Ceiling And Wallpaper Then Retexturing

I recently bought a house to rent it and it has the popcorn ceiling and wallpaper and I was thinking about taking the ceiling off along with the wallpaper. Then retexturing and painting the area. In total the area including the ceiling is around 1200 spuare feet and I was wondering how much it would cost per square foot to have someone do it? I just want to see if it is worth doing it myself.

Roughly about $1.50 psf, without knowing where you are located or all the details of the job.

is something wrong with the current ceiling? why not just repaint it and add some glitter? you can always tear it down and start from scratch which may be better long term than scraping the texture off and redoing..

Removal of popcorn.

1. Buy bug sprayer fill with water
2. Spray water on ceiling
3. Waith 10 minutes and scrape it off with a 12 inch mud knife.

Removal of wallpaper

1.
2. Spray texture over it and then knock it down and paint it.

Prime the wall paper first with an oil base prime. Soaks in the paper and makes it stick to the wall better. Then anything over it will stick and won't wet it and release it.

If the popcorn ceiling is painted you can add a cup of your urine and it will soften the paint and make life a lot easier! I know I know it sounds weird but works like a charm.

What about the seams in the wallpaper? Neither paint or texture will make them go away. Also, it still could blister at anytime during the priming ,texturing,or painting process.

I would try and remove the wallpaper first. Then skim as needed.

yeah that stuff is ugly and it can have asbestos in it, which you will then get all over the house. If they painted that crap it's a hassle,
as far as spaying it with urine. WTF?

Easy. If it's a heavy seam, you simply drag some twenty over them the spray away. If you can't feel the seem then it hides under the knock down.

Yes the primer is the messenger. It will tell you what you need to do. If the paper bubbles after the primer dries then you know you can pull it easy.

You never want to pull the paper off unless you are getting $20 per sq. ft.

That's my free house flipping tip of the day.

Re: Removing Popcorn Ceiling And Wallpaper Then Retexturing

If the paper bubbles while you are priming, when the oil dries the bubble is gone. The seams lay flat because of the oil primer and it will seal in all that tried to escape. Just skim over the seams with mud and sand the whole surface and you have a very smooth wall ready for paint. If you skimmed the seams, you should prime again if you are going to leave smooth. Latex primer stays on the surface, oil primer soaks in and reattaches the paper. Believe it or not.

Toy with this guy if you want, but this deserves repeating:

In my old-house resto projects I have to be real aware of this kind of thing. It's in old heating duct wrap, 9-inch floor tile glue, some grades of vermiculite insulation - - - - and a large percentage of popcorn ceilings from the 50's 60's and 70's. Use extreme caution. It costs only ~$30 to have a local lab check a sample before you kill yourself.

If you don't remove the wall paper to make the dust air born. Isn't it safer untouched? If it is sealed with an oil based product and painted over, it will be there another, who knows, fifty years?

Hey Brockster,
I tried the urine, thing on the texture and paint softener. Wow, it worked great, but my guys were sure unhappy with me when I left them to do the job... I told them they got to choose whose urine to use...
