Quickest Most Efficient Popcorn Removal

Gonna start trying to pick up more popcorn removal jobs. How do you guys do yours in a quick efficient way. I was gonna pick up a bigger garden sprayer, but I have a paint sprayer, would that be the best way to wet it before scraping. What do you do to keep things clean. A buddy of mine double tapes the floor, another holds a big trashcan lid under the knife and scrapes from stilts. I want to become real efficient at this. Thanks. Kev

Re: Quickest Most Efficient Popcorn Removal

We like to use Porter Cable power sander. Takes just about everything off the ceiling and puts in the vacuum. Then skim tight and texture or skim again and sand smooth.

paint sprayer=low pressure, little dish soap in warm water, and we don't tape, I like plastic with cloth over top and we clean up pretty quick after removal to avoid any suprises under the plastic. Also use regular drywall knives with the corners dulled and patience while the moisture does the work.

Is the sander overkill, doesn't it mess up the paper. How much is the one you mentioned. I know some in other posts are pretty pricey? Keep em coming guys.

A friend of mine used the ultra thin painter's plastic, then used spray adhesive all around the top of the walls, and turned the entire room into a trash bag. Just pulled it down and wrapped everything up when he was done. The adhesive didn't seem to damage the walls, but he was painting them anyway, so you'd have to test it out.

I use the painter's plastic as well. The 20' roll so you tape it to the top of the wall with blue tape, un roll it so it covers most of the floor as well. Then i go back and put duct or some other water resistant tape over the blue to keep the moisture from un-sticking it. I use an airless sprayer to wet the popcorn and let it soak for 10 or 15 minutes. Then use a 14" taping knife to scrape it off. It practically falls off by itself, unless it has been painted. In that case I use a floor scraper to break the tips off of the painted popcorn so it can absorb water. also use a trash can lid to catch the falling debris. This helps to keep from tracking it on your shoes.

I'm about to place an order with all-wall. The PC 7800 is on my list. Whats the best grit for removing popcorn?

We have used a plant sprayer to get it wet and then use 7" broadknives as scrapers. With the new regs concerning sanding paint on any house built before 1977 I would not be using a sander. The Porter Cable does not meet the regs and really does not trap all the shavings with its open design. If I was going to sand it would be with one of the rigs from Dustless Technologies.

Yeah, after using the PC for some semi gloss painted popcorn, I was not impressed. Floor scraper and and brute force, then spray like a dickens.

Re: Quickest Most Efficient Popcorn Removal

Did several whole house jobs this way, it is quick and fairly clean.

Painter's plastic the floor, then every wall, taped with small pieces of duct tape, bring in a garden hose with a sprayer nozzle, start at the back of the house and spray the ceiling. Don't be shy either, get it good, work to the front of the house.

By the time you are done spraying all the ceilings, the room you started in has started to peel on its owm. Use a knockdown texture blade, corners flared, and go to town.

Keep the garden hose with you, you may need to touch up a few areas. We usually put down two layers of plastic on the floor. This one, when all scraping is done, can be picked up and removed.

Now you are ready to float and texture, sand, whatever and everything is still masked and covered. Try not to spray the plastic on the walls directly, you can knock it down and that just pisses you off.

For the record, this is the only way I have ever done it, but it works great and is pretty quick.

Two of these in every corner, then every 4' or so. Make sure the push pin goes through the tape and plastic. Then, no more domino effect falling plastic.

The easy way to remove popcorn ceilings is to use a spray gun on low with hot water. Cover the floor with drop sheets and tape down plastic to the floor. Then go to home depot in the roofing department and get rolled card board and lay on the floor. Cost hatch the ceiling when you float it out with mudd. This might seem over kill but I know guys at are charging $3.00 per square

Sell many of these? That is an interesting approach, sounds pretty expensive though.

Re: Quickest Most Efficient Popcorn Removal

Ok this is what works for my crew we work on modular homes and have to fix all the crap that is damaged in transport and one of the big things is ceiling cracks. We do about one a day. First off all the ceilings are popcorn, (I hate this stuff but it payes the bills) we come in and start to sand off the popcorn with a pc 7800 mated to a Festool ct 33 dust extractor.(love this set-up) DONT USE JUST ANY SHOP VAC thay cant handle the fine dust they will just die. we don’t even put poly or drop sheets up at this time. We can then re-mud and tape the drywall and as it dries we can poly the room and lay down the drops the prep to spray. For poly we use 3M’s poly and taping setup. Just google "3m and hand masker" This poly is a bit more in price but it great we can poly on stilts and it done faster then the guys can pull in the spray hopper and compressor. And a dream to pull down. we do a whole house about 1200sf start to finish incl. clean up with three guys about 3hrs so a total of about 9 man hours. This is just my two cents.

Also like everyone has said you need to plastic EVERYTHING..makes clean up that much easier. I get my plastic which is 3 mil 10' x 150' roll for only 18.99....a great deal I think.

Here's some pictures

You can see I am about half way here or so

Are you removing Popcorn or have you gone the way of Dexter????
