Re: Pricing Point- Ups.- Home Builders
Hey there Sirex: Here in Central Virginia, we are seeing alot of people coming in from N.C. and the prices that you are quoting, is exactally what the guys from N.C. are charging our contractors.
We have lost alot of work and good drywallers due to this drop in price. When I moved to this part of Virginia in 1992, to hang and finish drywall-labor only-was 11.50 a 4 x 12 x 1/2 When i started my business a few years later, the board price was up to 15.00. Currently, the board price here is 20.00-labor only, Hang, tape, block, skim, and sand. All debris is put in a dumpster. Here comes the fellows from N.C. at 13-14 a board. I know that fuel, food, labor, taxes, and insurances have all gone up-but why are prices going down? The only way that a drywall crew can make money at these rate is to be very fast, not have work. comp., and then split the take. The drywallers from N.C. that I have talked to do it this way. By the way, they do not come back for touch-ups. It falls on the painter. I've seen 4 guys hang a 200 board house in 1 - 8 hour day. it is rough, but hung. Next comes same 4 guys as finishers. Taped with banjos by lunch, blocked with flat boxes by the end of the day. Skimmed the 3rd day with flat boxes and corners done with an angle head. 3rd man does the cornerbeads by hand. 4th day, sand with portercables and sponges. clean-up and go back to N.C. Back in Va. on Sunday Night. Monday, start again. 200 x 13 = 2600 2600 / 4 = 650.00 for 2-8 hour days, 1-5 hour day, and 1 3 hour day Not bad for 24 hours of work. On a 40 hour week=16.25/hr On a 24 hour week=27.08/hr
