Popcorn Ceiling Bubble Problems?

I've been doing more insurance work lately requiring me to do ceiling repairs from water damge. Twice I've scraped the popcorn off, quickset the area and sprayed my corn followed by a coat of latex paint. 10 minutes later I get bubbles from the popcorn loosing adhesion where I applied the mud. It once did it without the mud after I scraped down to original drywall. What is the cause and solution?

I'm spraying and not rolling my paint. Does mixing paint with my popcorn help?

Yes. If you get the popcorn too wet it looses adhesion just as your experiencing.

The popcorn needs to be 100% dry.

Why are you painting it. Most popcorn here does not get painted.

Re: Popcorn Ceiling Bubble Problems?

We have performed this type of repair work many times. When first started, we had this problem if the Drywall was still damp but did not sag.

After repairs are finished, we prime the repair first, then spray. We also scrape entire ceiling to ensure a uniform look. This has eliminated all texture differences due to previous spray thickness.

Popcorn in our area is fairly light in coverage and will show the board if not primed first or painted last.

Make sure popcorn is dry before painting as mentions in previous posts.

Re: Popcorn Ceiling Bubble Problems?

Thanks for your responses. Dryrocker I think your right, today I oil primed it first, then sprayed texture, used a heat gun to dry it and then painted it without a problem. The other time it happened I repaired it 3 failed times and primed it the 4th before I got it to work. I'm thinking priming and drying it before paint is the key, but its tough to do all in one trip without a heat gun. I've always built new houses so I never experienced this before ad I just thought the other job was a fluke since It has been working perfectly on my previous jobs.

Thanks guys.
