Pock Marks In Orange Peel Texture

I sprayed drywall texure for orange peel finish on walls using a larger texturizing machine over a wall that had been previously painted and primed. When texture dried, I noticed that there are several pock marks in the texure. It is like the spray blotches caved in in many areas when the spray texture dried. I have never had this happen before. I was using a Graco RTX1500 that is much more powerful than hopper/compressor outfit I have used before. Anyone have this problem when spraying texture and if so, what causes this and how did you take care of problem?

I have read through post and did not see anything about pock marks in the actual spray texture on walls. Adding liquid dish detergent to joint compound was suggested (or a commercial product) for eliminating pock marks when taping and coats prior to spraying texture, but did not see any reference to pock marks in the actual texture. Would adding dishsoap help when applying the orange peel texture or would this interfere with paint.

Re: Pock Marks In Orange Peel Texture

The Graco rep did advise me to use a small amount of soap in my texture mudd but I doubt that woould have made much of a difference for you.

Maybe someone else will chime in on a fix for next time you spray. BTW, were you using regular box mudd or unaggregated bag texture? I've had better results with the bag texture over painted surfaces than box mudd.

I'd probably use a 3/4" roller and really work the primer/paint into the pock marks now, if I were you...

Re: Pock Marks In Orange Peel Texture

Could be a number of different things. When spraying Orange Peel on a painted surface the texture does'nt soak in initialy like on raw drywall. Consequentely once the texture biulds up it starts to get pocked by any extra texture being sprayed on top of it along w/ the high air pressure mixed in w/ the Orange Peel.
(1)Try adjusting the material control on the machine first (Could be that it's set to high.) then the material control on the gun.
(2)The mix could be to loose.
(3)You could be holding the gun to close to the painted wall.

Once you figure out the RTX1500 you will love it. I have 2 of them. I also have the 1000 which is nice for small jobs. It has the hopper or gun and hose set up w/8gal tub.
Good Luck!

Re: Pock Marks In Orange Peel Texture

Thanks for useful info. so far. I used box mud this time. I think that spraying too thick has something to do with it. I also was a little rushed in mixing and may have mixed at too high of speed or over mixed. (There was some water left in the texture machine pump so when I started to test spray, this came out and I mixed some with mud already in 15 gallon hopper). I was using a #6 needle. I am curious from those who have used with the Graco 1500 on what tip used for orange peel with smaller splatter drops. I was standing back fair distance.
