Old Lath And Plaster

I was asked to patch and tape an old house (1915) which had been recently lifted in which the owners tried to keep the original plaster and lath. Lots of cracking.
It seems to me that there is a paper type product that can be applied over the entire wall like wallpaper before a skim coat of mud is applied rather than trying to patch each individual crack. Has anyone heard of this?

I told the homeowners that they would have been better to completely gut the place and start fresh with new board. Their thought was that they were saving money but in reality made a much harder job to finish the house.

And if you have an entire wall, you could always embed some wide fiberglass screen and skim coat it two or three times.

All-Wall or Warehouse Bay has a product caleld Nu-Wall or Nu-Coat. It is a fiberglass mesh that is applied like wall paper to walls with plaster compound and repairs all the small spider web cracks. I think you are still recommended to use screws and washers if there is a lot of plaster loose from the lath.

I used a similar product on a 150 year old house.(It was my own)and the walls came out great.Nothing came back in the 8 years since it had been done.

That is a brilliant idea - I never thought of that!

Also there is a product by Johns Mansfield which is a non woven glass liner for walls. I am still trying to find out where to buy it though.

Thanks to all!
