I bumped in to a union carpenter the other day. And he said he has some finish work for me. So we talked about prices. Told him what I charge to rock and finish. He gets the sheetrock and I hang, finish and get spackle and For XX per foot. And I tell him that all boards that fit the rooms. Iam not doing a room that is 11x11 and you get me 10s or 8s.I get 12s..An so on. Then he asks whats just finish price. Tell him xx. Thats labor and material and a few beads. Price goes up with more bead work. I have seen his work its okay for a carpenter. My thing is that i try to get my rocker all my work because he is good at it and makes my job so easy.
When you guys (finisher) look or bid on work that is done okay, maybe a extra butt in places where there souldnt be. Do you start adding $ signs or do you stay with your price or close to it?
When It comes to any job I alway look at it before dropping #s. But I was like what the hell lets see what happens.

Re: Networking

I always try to eliminate butt joints when doing the board counts, but if I needed some extras I wouldn't charge any additional fees, if i already have the box out it will take me 2 seconds to run by and hit that joint, but 99% of the time i get to do my own boarding...

If I were to only take on the finishing and it was a little hacked up in addition to butt joints all over the place, I would probably tack on a few cents...

Thanks for the reply...

I did a job a year ago. And the HO told me that he had 2 or 3 drywall companys come and look at it and and never call him back. One guy told him that since it was rocked by someone else, he wasnt going to do it. The job was rocked by carpenters not by a rocker. It was done with 10s and alot of extra work on my end.

So to go long with my OP. If you give a price for the the whole job (hang and finish). And he wants to rock it himself. Do you bump up your finish price? Or just ask to see it when he is done putting together the puzzle.

Re: Networking

I would tell him to get it hung, then call me for an estimate.

I always charge extra because I'll have to set all the screws & nails, plug or prefill the gaps, tape all the boxes, finish extra butts,& trim outside corners to set beads.

Would you rather do that and install the bead or have them install the bead and mess them up?

A-Men, Not NO, But.....][-][ELL NO! Nothing worse than trying to fix a crooked bead that some n00b nailed on.

Re: Networking

Lastnight I got a call for the guy i was talking about in the last post. He was telling me that he just looked at a job.(Basement) And wanted to talk #s... So I said it will range from .40 to .50 depending on what it looks like. And I will put up a few bead with with that. He goes 10 bead? I go a few.. Then he goes on about how good his work is.
So will just have to see.
I love it when guy say how great they are. And boxes are over cut and screws are sticking out.
