Inside Corners....

What are some of yall's methods for taping and mudding inside corners? I know how to tape and mud, but absolutely hate inside corners. Whenever I try to run my knife on one side, it always leaves a little trench on the other side from the edge of my knife. I have cornering tools, but I'm not a big fan. Does it all just come down to knowing that you can sand the hell out of it at the end.
Also, how do you all sand or your preference of sanding throughout the entire job? Lets say a basement remodel where 37 sheets of 4x8 are up floor to ceiling?

Re: Inside Corners....

I just use flat knives for corners. I start with a 5-6" for the first coat and work out from there. If you leave a slight line and let it dry it will cut off easily. Corner knives I just never got use to.
I do very little sanding as I get it smooth as I apply the mud. All this takes practice of course. I just knock of the high spots before applying another coat. After the finish coat I generally just need t feather the edges. I use a vacuum sander to keep the dust down.
Take our time, mix your mud and by the time your done with the basement you will be pretty good at it.

Re: Inside Corners....

I'm not a pro but here is what I do.

Apply mud to both sides of the corner with a 10" knife.
Put tape into corner.
Use corner tool to press tape into corner and squeeze excess mud out.
Immediately apply mud to both sides using 10" knife.
Use corner tool to smooth out mud and remove excess.

Next day, use 10-12" knife to apply mud to one side of joint.
Next day, use a sanding sponge to remove ridge on other side of joint then apply mud.
Next day, ready to sand.

Edit: I don't apply the mud as wide as the knife, I use the bigger knife for speed. Mud is usually 3-4" on either side.

Re: Inside Corners....

Things dry quick here in Albuquerque. The norm is to let one side dry then do the other side.

Re: Inside Corners....

AAHH!! So you guys will do just one side at a time???
I've done that before, but didn't know if it was good practice.
What's the deal with screens on sanding poles? I've tried that before, but it just left huge scratch marks.

Re: Inside Corners....

Sounds like thiers a lot of hand taping going on? I'd buy some tools for the trade. They do cost some money, but the time and more you can get done is worth it. Buy a corner box (AKA hockey box) and an angle head (AKA Plow). I use the 3 in for the finish coat. Just a little touch up in the corners & bottoms with a 5 inch knife. Lite sand with the pole sander, like 1 or 2 times across it and then a lite hand sand with an angled sanding sponge.

Re: Inside Corners....

Buy a flusher! The inside corners are hard to do well when you do it by hand. Check out pawn shops, they usually have a few flusher heads lying around, and get a handle at a drywall supplier. Should only cost ya around $100 that way. Tape the joints and let them dry. Then apply mud on both sides. Run the flusher over it and you'll have both sides done perfect. Let it dry, then use a knife to do any touch-ups. 3 ways will probably need a little extra work. When sanding be very carefull not to touch the opposite side with the paper, or it will leave a line. I usually use a sanding sponge. If you get a mud applicator pump with an inside corner attachment, it's even easier because it will save you having to put the mud on by hand. Before you know it, the inside corners will be the easiest part of the job!

Re: Inside Corners....

DON'T go to the pawn shops for your flusher heads!!!! They will be worn beyond belief and leave rounded corners. Buy the handle there, but not the flushers. Go to your local PacWest,Dryco, Winroc, etc. and buy them there.

Dittos on the "don't go to the pawn shop"
Parts for these tools are HIGH, if you buy a used one, it is going to need repair, after you do that you will have the price of a new one, in an old one.
Never used flushers, so I don't know if you can re-build them, but angle head parts and re-build costs are off the charts.
Its tough enough to learn these tools with ones that work like they should. They may seem exspensive, but compare them to the price of the truck you are driving, and they don't seem that high after all.

Re: Inside Corners....

Not being an everyday mudder, I have had some success with a full sized corner knife by putting mud on a an area just big enough to bed the tape, then enough for the second coat, then finally enough for the last coat when dry.
