Hows This For A Fixer

Got called to fix another pro s work'. I really hate fly by nighters. This is just one out of every bead in the house . I ripped it all down and started from scratch. Even the stand ups had a 1/4 inch gap from the ceiling. Shake my head sometimes.

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

That is just one of 10 posts joining up to bulk heads. inside 90's . It was a 600 000 dollar home. lucky he got caught before he could wreck it even more. The best part was he demanded a 2000 dollar advance, got upset cause he didn't get it and the home sat for a month before me and my wife were called in to make everyone happy again. The sad thing is Is that we have been going to fix other peopls messes for the last 6 months.

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

Whats wrong with that? Unfortunately you're not the only one in Edmonton fixing up that crap. I'm working on a job that Luckily they only taped two rooms before they bolted, leaving their tape and mud on the site. Two weeks later here I am finding all the surprises they taped over.

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

There is nothing wrong with that because I get to laugh about it and fix it keeping my good name, and my familly fed very well. That job was extremily good because I didn't even have to use the bazooka . What upsets me is that most of these guys get money in advances before they bolt, witch in turn upsets everybody and then treat the next guys like crap. It also puts the job on a "I need this finished yesterday " so I end up working long days to get it done. Don't get me wrong I don't have to go into these places to fix them. I do it because I love my job and like to hep out when the going is tough. And trust me I know that I am not the only one fixing these messes .

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

Hope whoever you're working for is paying for you to remove all the crap that was on there and then paying you properly for the job! I've had guys try and tell me -it's already half done, so I'm not gonna pay you for that, meanwhile the beading looks like what you've come across, so now I have to rip it off first and then start again. I don't give a @##$ if they already paid the guy. That's their problem. If they want it done right they should pay to have it done right.

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

Ya Im mean that way I get paid as if I started the job from scratch. Sometimes more if its really bad. I have the attitude that if you want to hire an idiot and not follow through on references then you get what you deserve. The problem I see is that there is so much work and they are making so much money that they need guys in there to do the work to stay on schedule. The attitude is get it done so we can get paid and we will fix it when the home ownwers complain. I personally think that is bad buisness. I learned this trade when things were tough and you had to be good to keep working.

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

I learned when things were tough too. It's funny how many guys out here have never had to learn that way, they figure it will last forever. The siding guys didn't work yesterday, cold and windy, today, nice and warm, they pack up at noon.

Vast improvment. Did you remove and replace or fill in the corners?

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

that 'after' picture looks great! Did you pull most of the beads b/c they weren't straight enough to go over? On new corner bead you put up-how many coats does it typically take? Do you (the pro's) mix your own compound-if so, do you use fast setting stuff for small jobs such as the one you've posted about?

Sorry for all of the questions-I'm just trying to learn

Re: Hows This For A Fixer

I pulled the bead because all the joins were gapped like the first pic- even the stand ups that butt into the cieling had gaps like that. If it was left like that and coated, it would crack and be alot of work down the road. I use paper bead and cut 45s to join the 90 's and three ways . I use caulking to fill the slight gaps that i leave. The gaps left buy me are usually because the framing is out and the bead does not join properly. I use Finish mud to coat twice ,sand and off to the next one.
