Hoppin Mad
So I'm calling builders today trying to get some jobs, I'm talkin to this one guy and he asks how much I'm gettin for a 4x12 sheet hung, finished and hawk and trowel textured. I think to myself I'd be ok with $50 bucks a sheet but maybe thats high considering the economy so I tell him anywhere from $40-50. He laughs like I'm crazy and says hes getting it done for $20 a sheet.
Sure I can stand on my roof and see Mexico, but come on, a 200 4x12 sheet house for $4000?? Rock, fasteners, tape and mud alone for me would be close to that. I live here where that big drywall company got busted last year, those guys are just about all sentenced now. It apparently did not get the message across.

He could be pulling your leg just to see how low you'll go. A lot of people are trying that trick in the current economic climate. I suspect it works too.

Re: Hoppin Mad
Yeah I guess thats possible I just didin't get that feeling though. I wasn't kidding about seeing Mexico from my roof though. The thing that sucks is drywall and hunting are my two most focused on things aside from my family. So when I'm not getting undercut by people who buck the system (which takes food out of my kids mouths), I try to get out to hunt, then I get to see tons of clothes, crap, book bags and trash all over the forest strewn about by the illegals. Everything I love is effected, family, work and the outdoors. OK I'm over it, for now. Hey mdshunk I see an Amish dude and that your from PA. I'm from Lancaster, I have some distant Amish blood and both my grandmas are full blood PA Dutch. I even got the beard goin right now. At leasst till the end of thje month when archery season is over. Whew I'm long winded.

We just had a customer last week tell us what he's going to pay because he said he's in control not us anymore. Thanks to the economy....

I would make sure to explain to him " With that package you also get 1/2" gaps, butt joints on 'down' joists, single coated bead and you can haul out the scrap anally" Posters placed on telephone poles and supermarket corkboards with his name in bold red letters and the words SCHIESTER and DEALBREAKER double outlined underneath with details of his accomplishments would let the community and other trades know his ways. |

Re: Hoppin MadQuote:
I think you made a mistake when you called him a customer. He would never be a customer of mine. And you shouldn't take on his work either. That's how these @$$h0le$ keep getting away with it. Let them suffer from the shoddy work they are about to receive or no work at all. And screw the economy. I would rather be a WalMart greeter than buckle to these pricks. Most of this economy nonsense is overblown from the media anyhow. It will just help weed out alot of these hacks I've been wanting gone anyhow. |

Re: Hoppin Mad
I assumed he was ALREADY a customer. If the job wasn't loaded yet he wouldn't be a customer he'd be the recipient of a big laugh in the face and if possible I'd throw him a few remarks that would later bug the crap out of him....nothing professionally damaging just little fish hook for the psyche lol . Being a janitor would be better than giving your skill and abilities to an ungrateful bag of jitt for a pile of peanuts

Re: Hoppin Mad
I've removed my mud on a guy like that before. Of course he got someone else to do his drywall for a few houses. Then he came back and we work for him again with respect going both ways now. He asked me if I could make it without him. I just asked him if he could make it without me and he said of course. I mentioned it was a two way street. And thanked him for the time together and we parted. But not for long. It didn't take him long to remember why he liked us after all. Thankfully... We get along great now, better than ever. We aren't just dumb old drywallers. We do deserve some respect. But we have to earn it...

Re: Hoppin Mad
If what he is offering is reasonable, take the job, if not wait until the illegals show up and call immigration and the licensing board.
