Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
On bags of silverset I remember seeing thier different makes of hotmud, 90, 45, etc, all the way down to five min. Never seen the 5 before though.....I guess you'd have to be fast. Hell, youd prob have rocks in your pan before you even got all the water poured in...

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
We use 5 minute hot mud quite frequently for small repairs.
Yes, it sets up very fast, but if all you need to do is a very small spot and want to get a couple of coats on and get out without waiting all day (or all morning), it can't be beat. |

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
Same here, use it quite a bit. When it says "5 minute" thats all you have, maybe less if it is warmer out. Works great for the small patches, and you have to clean your tools up right away too. Use COLD water if you don't want it to "pop" quickly, warm water if it is a real small patch and you don't care if it starts setting up in a couple minutes.
I generally keep the 20 minute stuff on the truck, and use a small fan to get it to dry quicker, but the 5 minute has it's uses too, especially in commercial work where you need to make small repairs quickly.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
I usually use the 20min easy sand and after a coat I listen to some music, take a quick walk etc..then go back and coat again..I hate to rush just to clean off the tools so quickly, but if the patch is small, then I would use it..remember more time=more money!!!

You'd be surprised @ how much mudding you can get done in 5 minutes.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
More like 3 or 4 patches worth.
![]() At least 5+ minutes for me, after mixing. Gotta move fast , even when mixing. Also, no time for paper tape. Fiber-tape in place is a must. |

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
I finally found some the other day and tried it. Worked great for the small area I was doing.
Why does anyone use anything more then 20 minute ? I figure if I have to step up to 45 minute I might as well use pre-mixed mud. |

90, 45, 20 & 5 in the trailer at all times. Each has it's place, just like clubs in a golf bag. Amateur golfers won't see any difference between a 7 iron and a 9 iron, but a pro will. Like tapingfool said, time is money.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
USG has a 210 minute mud. It is nice to use at times so you don't have to worry about setting in the tools and it will be hard when you come back in the morning even in high humidity. Great for running beads. You can mix four buckets and not sweat the time. It won't set up till you're long gone fishing or whatever you do after you have run your last pan of mud.
Five is for that one area you can stand in front of it and mix the mud. One pan at a time. I don't think I could mix and get a whole bag on. |

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
When I first started in trades my boss had me mixing up 5 minutes from the get go when 20 minute mud would have been a blessing for me cause I'm telling you it was setting up on me before I could even apply it to the walls on a nice 100*plus day.
Yeah he thought it was real funny of course after my three attempts then says whats the problem you're moving to slow boy. Then I noticed that he's using 20 minutes. I just did a drywall patch yesterday with some 20 min. mud and instead of waiting (where's that 5 min. mud when I needed NOW) used a hair blow dryer on 1st and 2nd coat then mixed up some 20 minutes with the topping (just a small amount) sanded, damp sponged, primed and painted...customer didn't even know where the holes were at (which is a good thing). |

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot MudQuote:
well its nice to use say 45 or 90 when skim coating big areas where you need 3 or more pails of mud to cover the whole area and some areas like stairways can be slow to skimcoat because of ladder set ups ,angled walls etc overall slower pace . if you ever have to skimcoat an entire house then you' ll know why 90 is the ticket plus you can use the dirty water with 90 . with 20 you need clean water with every wix or it will set up alot faster than 20 minutes. when your putting on 10 bags of mud you dont want to be running to the water source thats usually doen 3 flights of stairs for clean water in between every bucket. and no you shouldnt use regular mud when skim coating 1st coat plaster walls or scraped ceilings. Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot MudQuote:
This is a great product, to have..."if and when"....you need it. It's not something that you are going to use on a regular basis. As stated, it is primarily for smaller patches, or a smaller amount of work, when you need to get it completely coated quickly (i.e. -Repair 10 over-cut electrical boxes, etc). Bare in mind, as with all hot mud, if the walls or ceilings that you are patching have been painted (painted surfaces), the mud will not dry on those areas in the time stated for the mud. The centers may be good, but the outer edges, on the painted surfaces will not be dry. Basically, 5 minute on a painted surface will take 1/2 + hour for the edges to be dry...

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
I like to use the 90 and higher when going in to prefill an entire house / business, that way you can spin up a bucket or two and go to town. Especially when you have belly bands, or basturd joints (rough cut - to - recess) that really eat up the mud. Also like to add, I always liked the smell of the silverset for some reason, but they don't sell it around here any more... anyway, thats about it.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Used/Seen 5 Min Hot Mud
Im a big fan of the 5 min mix. When patching a hole like where a switch used to be, If thats my only repair to do, I like to mix up the 5 min after my heat gun is plugged in. Ill do a light scratch coat, hit it with the heat gun for a minute and then put on second coat with the same batch. I dont know if I just have bad luck or what but the 45 min mix Ive had the last two times has not sanded worth a damn. Ive never had a problem with 5 or 20.
