GYP. BD Ceiling

First I would like to thank all who take time out to help their fellow tradesmen/women on these forums. I just found this site and will put my 46 cents (inflation) in where possible.

I do retail construction and remodeling in the NE region and have a client that has changed specs on me regarding their ceiling. It was always drop in ceiling tiles now they have decided to change to GYP BD ceilings.

The one I need help with has 16' to deck ceiling, ceiling height will be 12', 1 1/2" 16 ga. channel, 7/8 furring channel.

1) Price of materials (the person I deal with @ the supply house was not helpful with info or prices)
2) Time I figure regular suspended ceiling +40% for gyp. bd. non finished.

Thank You all.

1) Price of materials (the person I deal with @ the supply house was not helpful with info or prices) I would say there is something wrong with a supplier that won't give you prices. That doesn't even make sense to me! If thats really true, he couldn't stay in business very long now could he?
2) Time I figure regular suspended ceiling +40% for gyp. bd. non finished. That really depends on you doesn't it? I have no idea how fast or good you are at either one of these tasks. The acoustic ceiling is a one man job and the Sheetrock ceiling is a two man job. Is your helper a laborer or an experienced installer? You'll have to take all that into consideration, it's not always a % thing.

Thank You all.
Here's a tip you didn't ask for, find a new avatar!!! Me and others on this forum got kids and we don't lock them away in their rooms at night. They are free to roam, might even come ask me something while I type. The last thing I need to do is explain to them why there's a picture of a squirrel with a boner on the screen!! Have some class, save the juvenile stuff for somewhere else!

Point well taken, I'll try to find a dog and a fire hydraunt to more suit your needs.
The supplier had to call, sytem problem, thats why I turned to this forum for help.
Addressing your second "response", my sheetrock guy will be working with my ceiling people.

Thank you!!!

You'll find that first time posters asking for prices don't exactly get straight answers. For the most part, it's discouraged all together. Besides, someone who's hung a few ceiling (sheet rock and acoustical) really shouldn't need to ask this basic question should they? Even if you've just seen it done a few times, I would think you might have noticed how long it takes. Take the time it takes x your labor cost + your cost of materials + your overhead + your profit margin = How Much.

Good luck

Re: GYP. BD Ceiling

Completely understandable as far as pricing. Just caught in a jam as the PM wants price by the AM. And trying to keep them happy while they are under the gun stinks.
My concern was deflection in the grid while installing, if this was an issue.

Trust me, I didn't want to have my first post be a pricing question but every site I look up turned me to "we have the best system","call today for a price quote".

Re: GYP. BD Ceiling

Is the GC asking you to install sheet rock to acoustical ceiling grid designed for tile? That I wouldn't do! It's not designed for it at all. There is a system that is designed for sheet rock.

No Jason, I've used that sytem, hated it, but we have done that before. Regular gyp bd to a level 5 finish.
Inquired about USG's wall to wall system.

Re: GYP. BD Ceiling

Material pricing will depend.. steel is currently going through the roof.

On labor, if the area is wide open, you would probably be safe at somewhere around 800sf per day to do the grid and then your normal hanging rates for the board. Depends on your guys and the job conditions, of course.

Level 5 at a ceiling? Are they painting it with semi-gloss paint or something?

Re: GYP. BD Ceiling

Oh brother! I hate all suspended drywall systems. They will push up until you get the sheet tacked off. If the deck is a few feet away, I would usually put in a few kickers from the deck to the grid. If it's out of reach you gotta grin and bear it!

From my experience a good ceiling guy should hang 1000 sf a day in grid and 1500 sf of revealed edge tile. Hanging lids on that stuff, 500 to 700 sf a day with 2 guys! (moderately cut up).
