Fastest Way To Get Hanging Done?

I want advice from the full time rockers, I have alot of drywall sidejobs coming up (small-residential) under 100 boards. Im using a panel lift / rotozip.

There's two of us; me and my partner who are both "mechanics" although he is less exp than me. Should I have him follow my lead as a glorified "helper" or should we both split up and hang separately as much as we can?? Trying to get this done quick and efficient and see what were capable of. Thanks.

Yep. I'd have him as my helper. Tack the boards up and let him finishing screwing them off while your cutting the next boards.

As I was reading the title I was thinking about everytime I need to get a sheetrock job done faster your response is the first through my head. All my drywall comes out perfect but anything over 10-20 sheets just takes too long.

Hang big sheets on the ceiling together...tacking only as many nails as required to hold up sheet. Hang big sheets on the wall together... tacking only. Then split up and do the small stuff individually. One guy screws the place off as the other cleans up scraps.

OR

Sub out to some rockers!!!!!!

Get rid of the drywall jack! Those things take more time then putting it on your head and going to town.

As mentioned hang and tack with nails together. While he nails off you are measuring for the next sheet. When all large sheets are hung split up to do rippers, windows, corner bead, and screw off.

Re: Fastest Way To Get Hanging Done?

The better of the two needs to be the leader and the other the helper. And the ''helper'' needs to understand that. This would work best on new clean hanging.

Small remodels might work better to split up if it's alot of small stuff. And team up on the big sheets.

A good cutter can bury a helper.

And.............Forget the panel lift!

The only time you should split up is when you are confidant that he is as good as your or better...and not to mention has the drive...otherwise, you are looking for a big headache..

I had a similar problem recently. Leading installer assisted by a helper approach worked for me.

No one uses a lift for ceiling boards? Your head? really??

I still have a crik in my neck from the last ceiling I did like that in '85.

Re: Fastest Way To Get Hanging Done?

Well, I guess they are kind of wimpy but I love my Gypsy Jack; haven't used it for a while but man it was nice when putting up 4x12 sheets. We used that and a Senco strip screwer and a rotozip and it actually became kind of fun to do drywall!

No measuring and screwing up where outlet boxes went, just tack up the board and rotozip out the openings. It might not have been the fastest way to do it but it sure was easy

Re: Fastest Way To Get Hanging Done?

well dont use you head, you just make it so your elbow locks in when the rock hits the ceiling, then you hold it and have a clear view of where to screw.

Re: Fastest Way To Get Hanging Done?

Back when we nailed ceilings we held boards up with our heads. Everyone did it that way. Chicago burbs in the 70's.

We had a couple guys that hung whole houses by themselves. They used those machines/lifts to hang ceilings and walls. Back in those days we were not pushed to get a house hung in a day!

When I moved to Florida we adjusted our benches to straight arm the board up so we could screw it up. No more nailing.

Then we were turned on to 3 man team, two hold it up and one screwing. 8' ceilings.

And the there is the ''kick-stick'' method. Where you prop/wedge the T-pole under the board to hold it up.

Did I miss any techniques? Enlighten me.

Jacks are a waist of time, and money... I suppose they are fine if you only have yourself and a few sheets, and you have not friends..

Re: Fastest Way To Get Hanging Done?

I agree. Jacks are slow. But so are most guys after that hang rock the hard way for about 10-15 years.

I know a couple drywall contractors who had to throw in the towel because they had such bad neck problems. It was either quit or live with pain the rest of your life.

I've got a lot respect for rockers. I can slap on shingles and love it all summer long, hanging rock sucks but is much better with guys who know what they're doing. I've watched a couple crews who can hang super fast and make it look effortless.
