Drywall Screwing (Stagger Screwing?)

Used a new drywall hanger this week and they installed all wall board (54" x 12') with glue and screws. However they only screwed one screw per stud and staggered every stud so:

. . . .

. . . .

No stud has more than one field screw. Hanger says it possibly bows the board and that they are doing it this way often. I won't repeat exactly what I told him to do but he is putting more screws in the field as we speak.

Anyone seen this before?

...(my screw diagram "squared up" when I posted it. Imagine the bottom row offset.

Sounds like an excuse to use less screws since the price of them has almost doubled recently. Tell them you want three in the field,, NOW!

sure the glue might hold it but you still need the screws to draw the sheet flat. you dont want a bead of glue drying in between the sheet and stud before its smooshed flat and i would be concerned if he was rescrewing it after the bead dried because you will have glue build ups between the rock and studs and the screws will just pop because now your not screwing to a flat surface, the stud.

Re: Drywall Screwing (Stagger Screwing?)

I have seen inspectors here wanting to glue and screw, or double screw.

I would go with what the plans say. If it says 6/12 for example, I bet the inspector will be looking for the right amount of screws.

That's my 2 cents...

our building code doesn't even call for sheetrock inspection inside the house here anymore, just the firewall .

Wouldn't dream of trying it but,
I just did a gut on a '69 vintage house
where they glued (brand new idea then)
and only put 2 nails per stud in the
field and it was all still attached.

Re: Drywall Screwing (Stagger Screwing?)

when left to act like professionals we put 2 in the field on 48" and 3 on 54" but as most finishers and GCs we work for know more about hanging than hangers we end up going with one in the field. we glue everything WELL. thats one area where we don't buckle under....some guys think a case of glue does 100 sheets....they get more. they always get more. as for staggering....thats how we percieve the mentality of alot of so called "pros" around here.

Re: Drywall Screwing (Stagger Screwing?)

Where we are in BC, there is no code for drywall...even for fire..the code states that we can have no less than 1/2" drywall between floors and on truss's.
As for the glue. We do it all the time. Some people shoot 1 screw every other stud on 16" centers. We do it every stud, and on 54" 2 screws every other stud, with one on the offset. The screws are only there to get the glue to hold. Once the glue is set you will not get that sheet off in one peice. Also the glue will eliminate most screw pops. We dont nail very often anymore, its strickly screws. Every 16 to 18 inch on the top and bottom plate, and 1 every stud in the feild, of course with glue.

I always glue and put a screw at least every foot in the field maybe a few extra on seams..

3 In the field and 4 in the field on the butts so that vibration doesn't make them crack. No one here uses glue ever.

Re: Drywall Screwing (Stagger Screwing?)

We always use glue and plenty of screws......having cracks appear is a PITA i would rather take the extra step of gluing to try and eliminate........especially on ceilings.
