Drywall Screw Length Vs Vapor Barrier

hi to all,.

I know this site is mainly for professional builders; I'm just a lowly amateur among you but I'm in the finishing stages of building my own home (see attachment, old picture) which has been a fantastic project

I learned a lot of things from this site but now I have a pretty specific drywall-related question that I've been unable to find an answer for.

I hope this forum of professionals can help me out.

I'm putting up 5/8" X-type drywall on my garage ceiling. It will be screwed into 1x4 furring strips (in fact 3/4" thick, as you all know) which are nailed into the trusses. Sandwiched between the trusses and furring is a .006" poly vapor retarder. R40 cellulose will be blown in there afterwards.

If I use the recommended 1 5/8" screws to hang the sheetrock, the screw tips will stick out about 1/4" past the furring strip. All these screw tips will end up puncturing the vapor retarder.

Is this an accepted practise? If not, is there an alternative?

Thanks in advance!

1. Your Question: That's fine.

2. Why all the strips on your Tyvek?

3. They are gonna make you go over to the sister DIY site.

So it's accepted practise? Great, thanks!

they're only to keep it from flapping around until I do the exterior finish. Everything will be covered up with styrofoam ine one way or another.

Ground floor will be Permacon Sure-Touch stone (styrofoam backed system ... I can't post a link since my post count is too low) and the rest will be James Hardie over 1" styrofoam with a few areas done in Dryvit acrylic

that's possible ... I hope I can still access this forum for stuff I can't get answered elsewhere. Sometimes there's no substitute for a real pro

Blacksheep, why did you use the 1x4 on the bottom of the truss?

Re: Drywall Screw Length Vs Vapor Barrier

there's a 12' wide livable area above the garage, so I had to add trimmers and additional 2x10's in between trusses to get 12" OC floor support

there's a little difference in height between the trusses, the connectors and the additional 2x10's, so the 1x4's (installed perpendicular to the trusses) help even things out.

Also, I guess that's just "how things are done" around here, I've never seen sheetrock applied directly to the trusses in any local building

I was wondering why you had to fur the trusses with 1x4s too. I see why now and thats understandable but no its not standard practice and i have never done or seen it done with out it being a special case like you have there. Most around here would have used floor trusess or I-joist on that floor and stick built the roof. Looks good anyway
