Drywall Repair - Texture Matching Help

The part of fixing drywayll that I never enjoy, but nonetheless it has to be done . Anyways I've hung about 2 sheets of 1/2", the same thickness that is currently hung and am now at the point of removing the texture around the edges of the new drywall so that I can tape and blend the texture. A couple of questions on this (done it before many times, but this one is giving me grief!)

Q1: What's a good tool to remove texture that's been painted multiple times? It's a medium thickness orange peel texture that appears to have been randomly knocked down. I've tried a palm planer that has multiple little teeth on it, but it doesn't seem to dig into the texture, and I've also tried the rasping tool, but that's about all it's good for. I haven't tried 80grit sand paper yet, but I'm thinking it may just clog.

Q2: How wide of a channel over the seams make for a good blend of old/new texture? Should I float out 6", 12", etc?

Thanks!!! All advice is helpful, well related to this topic anyways!

Re: Drywall Repair - Texture Matching Help

I have made many repairs of drywall and have never removed old texture. It sounds like you are hoping have an area for the new mud that will just match up with the old in height?

I've never heard of this with orange peel, anyone else do this? I knock off the points of a skip trowel texture, but just go over the orange peel.

Nope, never tried removing orange peel. Usually just accoustical texture on ceilings. Just blend in and feather the joints as you would any other butt joint.

The trick is blending in the new texture to the old. I will tape off the edge where old meets new with plastic, then shoot the new patch first. Then remove the tape and plastic and go over the whole patch & a couple of feet onto the old to blend it all.
