Drywall On Ceiling Bathroom

Sorry if this is a dumb question, Im new to the site and don't do alot of drywall but try and do the best when I do. I have a customer who has a house less than a year old and in their master bathroom the texture and paint on the ceiling is peiling off. Is that because of not using moister resistnace sheetrock or because of cheam paint or what? any help would be great. thanks.

Well I don't know where you are from but most codes CA. Building code, IRC, IBC don't allow green board on any ceilings because of the possibility of catastrophic failure. Water may build up on the green board ceiling then collapse suddenly.

I would guess for your problem it was cheap paint from a cheap painter.

Hello SA its good to see you Yes, you are right, they totally removed green board from use. For the walls only allowed now cement, fiber cement, or glass mat gypsum backer material in tub and shower areas. On ceilings they allow only Water resistant Gypsum backing board, but the framing got to be 12" on center for 1/2" material, and 16" for 5/8" material.

Re: Drywall On Ceiling Bathroom

they could have a roof leak or plumbing leak, push up on the ceiling where the paint is peeling, if it feels soft there might be water getting to the back of the board. if not then yeah the paint and primer maybe your problem.

I'm sure that it has a exhaust fan but if there the type of people who take long steamy showers and not use it... I've not really seen paint peel because of it but I've seen mold. But ya never know?

Re: Drywall On Ceiling Bathroom

They told me they do take long steamy showers and the bathroom does have an exhaust fan but I doubt they use it when they take there showers. Im just guessing and hoping the paint was cheap or they didn't use a primer so Im going to re texture and paint and hope that works. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Also check the clearance at the bottom of the door. A fan does no good if air can't come in.

Not using the fart fan + long, steamy showers = Paint Failure!!! IMHO

Re: Drywall On Ceiling Bathroom

You CAN use green boards on the ceiling!
But you must meet the manufacturers specs, usually for the green board to be used in wet places on the ceiling, it should be 5/8" instead 1/2", or you can also use 1/2" but only if your joists are less than 12" apart.

I recommend using purple boards in bathrooms, since they are water, mold,.. resistant, 1/2" thick and fire rated. White/regular gypsum boards, they just give me this feeling of "im gonna get bad soon.."
