Re: Cornice Cracks!!

I have never heard of Paper Cornice, I make the cornice mouldings out of plaster and if we get stress cracks we'll just mud the areas in using a grout bag, then use our plaster knifes, But when we pour a cast for a cornice moulding we put burlap in the plaster to pervent any cracking, but paper I don't know what your talking about and if your cornice of paper is ripping that means that house or building is really moving up and down. you in California where they have Earth quakes?

Re: Cornice Cracks!!

Boman, if you use caulking or "No More Gaps" etc, this ain't fixing the problem, it just hides it. Same thing with using mud in the areas where fine cracks appear.

I live in Australia and Paper cornice is abundant over here. Surely you have it in the States.

By the way Frank, we don't have too many earth quakes, but we have had a very long drought. Been going for about 7 years now. Outside ground strinks, cracks appear on external brick walls and even inside plasterboard walls. A real problem.

What I might do tommorrow is take a photo of this cornice and post it to show you what I mean, if you want me to. ??????? let me know.

Yeah like Frankawitz said. My guys and just use a grout bag and our knives, fill it with mud, and sand it out. Repeat if necessary. To avoid the problem you could always make your own.

Re: Cornice Cracks!!

Boogga, Yeah that would be a problem, Man when you guys down there do plaster and drywall that's got to be a pain after working all day and then come back the next day to find cracks in your walls and ceilings that would suck. Is the heat a problem as far as high temps go I know without having any rain the ground just keeps getting harder, That kind of problem has to be something when building a house or building huh? Isn't there any type of barrier you have to keep the moisture in the building so that your drywall mud or plaster will dry slower. I know here in Michigan we have problems with drywall and plaster not drying out cause of the high humidity. now I understand why your having problems with the cracking.

Re: Cornice Cracks!!

Oops! I was thinking of the elastic property of that caulk could provide. A few years a go, I did use some for a corner in wall. As far as I know it is still sealed. may be a patch, but I do know others have done this. I agree, caulk will not fix drought conditions causing the ground to shrink. Sounds like a huge allround problem there. As to keeping moisture inside, would humidifiers not help the situation after repairs are made? I mean it sounds as if this would be a recurring problem if something is not done to control the dry conditions. Maybe a humidifier at least to help slow the drying process? Sorry if this sounds inane. Just thowing some ideas out. Will be interesting to know what you decide to do. Heh, I'll shut my trap now and watch to see what you guys come up with.
