And what is on his wish list for the 20k...(that probably wouldn't get him far past his bar with me, esp. if this is a wet bar)

Well, there is going to be a Bedroom, full bath with urnial-plumbing is rough'd in. then full bar with taps. built in intertainment wall. tile floor around bar and bath. I rally want the walls to be cedar due to moisture what you think 20K with labor?

I would think cedar, unless varnished or urethaned, would be more of a problem than drywall in a damp location, once painted drywall hold up quite well.

I would recommend finishing your last job at elementary school spelling before taking on a project of this nature.

Re: Building A Guy Basement In To A Bar/ Football Room

When you say "with labor", does that mean labor only, or are you expected to build a full bar with materials you supply, a full bathroom with materials that you supply, cover the walls with cedar that you supply, and cover the floors with tile that you supply? If this is the case, I think 20k should get you a little more than a third of the way there. If it is labor only.....still not an enticing job to me.

if you're putting in a bath and have to install a tank/pump in the concrete to get the waste up to the pipe, a large chuck of this 'budget' can be accounted for.

After seeing the project description, the budgeting does not correspond, IMO.

If you are worried about mositure, you need to address that first. Mold grows on anything. Didn't you ever see a moldy rock? Properly address the mositure problem first. Then you can apply what ever finish they want to the walls, ceiling and floor.

Personally, I would tile the entire basement and then put down area rugs for some warmth. I hate hung ceilings unless it is a commercial business. Sheetrock is the way to go, just make sure it is fully wired for EVERYTHING. Electric, Sound, Cable, Phone. Do it all, then rock it. They even have the paperless sheetrcok now. (its purple)

I have built a few bars. You want to be sure to either Spray Lacquer or poly the vertical surfaces and use Bar Top Epoxy for the bar top. Stuff is thick as glass and makes a beautiful finish.

Here are the before and after shots. Glass Block was a requirement of the customer.

Here is another bar I did for a customers Tiki Room. I installed the Reeds on the wall, bar and Bamboo on the ceiling joints. Bar top was covered with a cloth that the customer picked out, then they layed out an arrangement of Antique Hawaiian Post Cards and I poured the Bar Top epoxy over this. Pic shown does not have the epoxy on it yet.

Re: Building A Guy Basement In To A Bar/ Football Room

Digger1799, and to you that actually care that don't act like beyatchs,

Thank you for the advice, and those are some nice pics I hope someday I can do some nice work like that. I love this trade hopefully I will be up there in the carpentry field and can show off my work with the best of them. I am going to ITT for Architectual design when I get back from Iraq, I am out of fort carson. SO until I get out of the army in like a year I am just going to do what I can maybe get my name out there a lil bit do some small jobs. Its really nice being in the army and having some carpentry skill cause high ranking people love to spend $$ on they're house's, Decks basements, and so on.
If you guys can give anymore advice I will take it in.

DUDE!!! THAT IS SOMEONE'S "BASEMENT" BAR?? WTF???

Gad damn!! Awesome work on your end too. I've been in plenty of houses that had a bar of somewhat, but NEVER a fully stocked restaurant type bar like that..
WOW!!

Re: Building A Guy Basement In To A Bar/ Football Room

I agree with digger. Address the moisture problems first or just make sure there wont be a problem later. Make sure all wiring is done for lights, entertainment, speakers and such. Then insulate tile and sheetrock the whole thing. If you run out of money at least you have the important stuff done. The nice things can allways be added later. Let the customer know this upfront! It depends on where your located to how far your money will go. I know icould get it done for 20k here and it'll be nice but probably not as laid out as diggers pics.
