Best Way To Hang Drywall On Concrete Wall??
I'm in a situation where I need to hang drywall directly against a concrete wall in a basement. Does anyone here have experience in doing this? Will the waterproof drywall work with this application? Is it better to use adhesive to attach it or concrete drywall screws? Thanks for your help!

Re: Best Way To Hang Drywall On Concrete Wall??
Are you forced to put the drywall directly on the concrete wall or do you have at least a little bit of play to add strapping??? Especially on a basement wall wouldn't suggest applying drywall directly to the foundation wall (could end up with a bad moisture issue even with green board not to mention any movement that might occur)... At the very least you would need a vapour barrier!!!
I've on many occasions had to install drywall on a concrete or cinder block wall (but never in a basement). And usually I was able to at least use strapping (3/4" plywood or furring bar). On a couple installs (on the outside of elevator shafts, etc..) we have installed drywall directly on the concrete using construction adhesive and minimal use of Tapcon concrete screws. But there wasn't a moisture issue (like you might encounter in a basement)... Would hate to see you go through a bunch of hard work only to get called back a few months later. The client you're working with has to know the possible problems they could encounter and sign off on it or give up the few inches in their room for you to do the job properly!!! Just my 2 cents!!! |

Under what circumstances do you need to hang drywall directly to a basement wall? Are you planning to bury recepticles into basement wall?

Forget the drywall and plaster the wall.

Re: Best Way To Hang Drywall On Concrete Wall??
The basement has poured concrete walls in combination with 2X6 plates and studs. The concrete stairsteps from front to back, where the back is all studs and no poured concrete. They want drywall on the existing studs, but that moves into the poured wall section. Since there isn't a 1/2" offset from the studs to the edge of the concrete, I would have to attach the drywall directly to the concrete in order to stay flush with the other drywall.
Is plaster the best option here? The customer doesn't want to lose anymore room space nor do they want to incur the additional expense of having to build a 30' wall over a wall that serves them well to make room for the drywall without getting against the concrete. |

That sounds like an excellent idea.... Would I still need to use the green board in areas where the concrete wall exist? This seems like a fairly inexpensive way to solve the problem without getting right up against the concrete.

Actually, you can tape, texture and finish plywood just like you can drywall. You have to skim coat the whole thing, but it will work.
Years ago, remodeling restaurants for a major national chain, that was in their plans. When finished it looked the same. It gave them something solid to hang things on. |

Re: Best Way To Hang Drywall On Concrete Wall??
As K@R says fir out studs with 1x2's when you get to the concrete tapcon them to the wall then put 3/4" foam between the 1x2'S on concrete, sheetrock as usual no MR board needed.
