Best Roller Pad To Use For Skim Coating
First post! I was wondering what size nap you all use to roll on a skim coat. I played around a little with a 1/2 and 3/8 in. weenie roller
But they both seemed like they wouldn't hold hardly any mud. Is there a lot of sanding Involved? Will a 9 in. Lambs wool roller work any better? Never done this before And I'm trying to skim coat over a sand textured wall. What's the best way to do this? |

I've had the best luck with 240mm/18mm rollers - get the good quality ones that don't lose their pile. Roll on and pull off tight with your widest trowel or knife. May require 1,2,+ touch up coats depending on the underlying texture. Best to have one guy rolling and another following behind and just do it in 1 meter strips, edges require a bit more attention. The sanding will depend on your skill at applying it but it's pretty easy to get good results - pole sand, light and sponge, then touch up any remaining tool marks or bare patches.
Good luck, D's Last edited by d's; 03-16-2009 at 01:02 AM. |

Most paint stores carry a double width roller, we use an old cooler for a tray. These rollers are about 18" wide and you can cover a lot of board in a hurry.

Re: Best Roller Pad To Use For Skim Coating
I use 90minute setting or taping for the 1st coat to ensure a good bond and a finishing/topping mud for the second so it can be easily sanded out. Mix the mud looser so it just hangs onto the roller - makes it easier to trowel out. Roll with just enough pressure to get it to roll when it's fully loaded in a big W then put some pressure on it to even it out. You should get close to a square meter per roller load.
Great idea on the double wide roller and cooler. I'll give that a try on the next big skim job. If you're just doing a room or two a regular roller and 5gal pail is adequate. D's |
