AZ Drywall

I'm just looking for a little input here. Me and my partner run a metal stud/ drywall/ acoustical company in the New England area. We are looking to head out to Arizona to do the same. I am just wondering what the market is like, going rates for labor etc.Things are fairly cheap right now due to bottom feeders undercutting the more established companies. Rates right now for a carpenter are around $22-$25 per hour. Just wondering what to expect when we head out there. Also, wondering what the volume of work is right now. Thanks.

I was just there, I saw a few MASSIVE projects, but you have to go up against mexicans. I would say you could get 15 - 18 maybe. If your goin south texas is a better bet.

Re: AZ Drywall

We went out there to check it out last year. In Arizona you have to be registered and lisenced to perform any trade, including metal stud/drywall. We have already set everything up. Because of that I would expect the rates to be a little higher, not alot of illegals are getting lisenced.

Re: AZ Drywall

If your a Mexican and you can speak spanish go for it. I'm white I can't speak spanish, and I don't hire illegals. And my family suffers for it. If you want to run a legitimate buis. with a clear conscience this is not the place for it, the only way I compete is by doing better quality work than the next guy, and my phone doesn't ring to often. If you got a good thing goin out there wait this thing out, AZ is one of the worst states, then factor in the sombreros it adds up to a crappy situation. Good luck though, either way. Just for kicks check out a previous post named "Hoppin Mad".

Re: AZ Drywall

I worked steel stud framing for a framing/drywall company this summer for $20/hr, surprisingly the company I worked for had mostly english speaking people doing the framing. The drywall, on the other, was all spanish speaking people. I worked on a big commercial job for them that they were booked on until 2011. I quit after a few months because I learned what I wanted to learn, but last I heard most people that worked for the company have been laid off and they were dropped from the job. Not a great time to start a drywall company in Arizona. There is a lot of competition, esepcially low cost competition (some of them do amazing work, some stink).
