Ah! Yes...paper Vs Mesh AGAIN!

Not a question just my 2 cents worth. I've always used papertape and mesh to bind breakages, over the years I've tried mesh on the odd butt in wardrobes and nine times out of ten they crack before the next coat, but when I heard some local guys saying sheetrock mesh was so much stonger I decided to start experimenting with it over several months and not one single sign of weakness or cracking, what I do is V groove the join as do with papertape, mud the butt join first (setting comp) so the tape fibres would be bonded to the board better (like fibreglassing).
Meshed butts are waaaay better to keep flat and there's no swelling of the tape to deal with. The only concern I would have is 10 years down the track will they crack.
The next thing I will try with sheetrock mesh is butts in garage ceilings because over here they rarely insulate garage ceilings and with the intense heat directly on the back of the board we quite often get cracks there (tapered and butts). If it stands up to that then it must be stronger than paper...I'll let you know in 6 months.

Did you use premix or setting compound with the mesh? That is the magic question...

I don't think the mesh is worth anything with bucket mud, do you? But it does seem to be pretty good as long as you use Durabond or similar. They use it exclusively in thin coat plaster applications, so the setting material must be the goody of it.

I've seen many garages where the silverfish ate the paper tape and left holes in the envelope.

Setting compound first 2 coats, sometimes the first coat will suck back and leave the mesh exposed so you will still need setting comp on 2nd coat. I don't even use premix with papertape but thats just me and where I come from

I use paper tape on internals, metal beads on externals, and scrim on the rest.
I first coat with a setting compound and then do 2 finish coats with joint cement. I have never been called back to sort out any cracks.

You are right. All mesh tapes require setting compounds.

The reason I asked is that every other mesh vs paper thread always starts with a guy bitching about mesh tape not working, and when we ask what he set it in, he'll say "premix". WRONG!

Re: Ah! Yes...paper Vs Mesh AGAIN!

I have been a painter and crywall finisher 44 yrs. this Sept. I always use mesh on the butts/flats. Mesh except inside corners. I use hot mud first and sometimes 2nd. Topping after. If the fill is going to be too deep I place paper tape in sometimes or just 20 min. hot mud. never had to go back. On repairs, I ofton use drywall adhesive or liquid nails and screws. Allot of drywallers in Oregon I know glue and nail/screw all their work. I am 72 now and still working part time painting/drywall repair and matching textures. I have a friend at 75 doing the same. I am working on a website to meet all you guys online..My wife wants me to keep at it but I would like to leave the trade. Any suggetion ??? Johnnygo@localnet.com. in Payson, AZ

Johnny, it's seems you've been doing drywall long enough. Why not learn framing. In a few years you can be a journeyman and start a whole new career.

Re: Ah! Yes...paper Vs Mesh AGAIN!

most of my mesh is for crack repairs. although ive used the mesh on a few closets we built last week. seems fine for now. On another site, we are doing a complete house demo and all the drywall were taped with mesh, no paper anywhere. you pull the mesh tape, that stuff flakes everywhere. with paper, i never seen it flake off when pulling out.

Re: Ah! Yes...paper Vs Mesh AGAIN!

there is nothing wrong with mesh as long as you know how to use it and the type of mud setting type. i ask people do you like to use mesh and they say no its crap, well come to find out they dont know how to coat over it or dont like the easysand or dont know how to mix a smooth lump free mix, i love using mesh i use it every chance i get, mesh on the long and butt joints and paper on angles string my angles first then, mesh joints put up beads spot screws then heavycoat my mesh joints and beads with quik set i call this fast coating use my banjo on angles with my flusher
never mix mesh and readymix duh

for repairs nothing taste better than mesh and 5min. easysand

but also there is a time for mesh and a time for paper always depending on the job location and situation

Re: Ah! Yes...paper Vs Mesh AGAIN!

i like to know why people dont like mesh. it dates back into the plaster years. mesh, diamond lathe, wood lathe, rock lathe, and so on. i also do alot of old house repairs and plaster tie ins. and i tell you what older houses are alot more squarer than new houses today. tell me it aint so. mesh is just as strong as paper. its a fiber material. like i said, guys that dont like mesh has no skill on it or quick set. like this one guy. he says "why dont we paper tape with quick set." PAPEER TAPE WITH QUICK SET!!!! WHY EVEN THE THOUGHT. i looked at him and said what!!!! if you want to do that just paper tape the angle and drop back a mesh all the butts and long joints. and turn around a heavy coat. after putting the beads on too. he didint say anything except i just dont like mesh...

get to know how to use mesh with quick set and trust me youll love the productiviy.
