2x 5/8 On RC

Title says it all

Working on a house and the FD wants double 5/8 on the ceilings both on the main and top floors. Main floor has speed joists (11 1/4") and PSL beams in various locations (11 7/8"). I told the customer to strap down the speedfloor with RC...he tells me about the 2x 5/8. Can RC hold two layers of 5/8" board?

It may be easier for the drywaller to put in between layers but any wiring etc on the bottom of floor joists may prevent that. We have put 2 layers of 5/8" on rc channel. Typically we will use 20 ga @16" oc. Just my $.02.

I'll let the customer know

I doubt the RC between the two layers will work for the FD...something tells me they won't like the air chamber it will create.

Likewise, I remember #10 truss head or pan heads
to attach to the joist though.

what does the fd have to do with itit should be on the plans from the engineer.I had a appartment complex that was a fire job. I fought with the engineer about putting rc on the studs then 2 layers of 5/8. his reply was it was past pratice and the gap would not matter. I contacted the insurance company for the building and gave them the news. we ended up doing it the right way.instead fo rc use tough rock sound deadning board. better product and better fire rating. u may only need to have 1 layer of sound rock and 1 5/80. infofrom www.gp.com toughrockhope it helps.jay
