25 Gauge Dimpled Metal Studs???
Has anybody used the 25 g. dimpled metal studs (3 5/8) from HD? They are pcs of crap. Won't hold screws, they strip out. Very frustrating!

Re: 25 Gauge Dimpled Metal Studs???
I'm assuming these are the Dietrich brand ones that just came on the market late last year/early this year. I haven't tried them yet, they tell me that the 25g because of the dimpling acts like a 20g, what kind of screws are you using?

Re: 25 Gauge Dimpled Metal Studs???
Self tapping 1 1/4" for metal and I had some wood screws also. I was using a quickdrive. I needed just 2 extra studs, which I had to add on to the existing studs (back to back). It was a quick R&R for an existing wall that had 5 damaged pcs. of 4' x 8' x 5/8" I was installing vertically and I needed the extra studs to catch the edge for a couple of the new pcs for screwing.
The self-tapping screws worked fine in the old studs (25 g) but I could not get 1 screw to hold in the new ones with the quick drive. I had to baby them in with a batt. drill. |

Re: 25 Gauge Dimpled Metal Studs???
Have encountered this many times. Question, did the screws only strip out while screwing the bevel of the board???? Sometimes this problem can be attributed to an overly hard bevel (when compressed in the factory). Yes the new studs seam softer. Personally, I wouldn't use self tappers either (regular drywall screws would give you more bite).
Had a couple of jobs in the recent past with this problem (was attributed to hard bevels - because we had no problem with screwing the field). We had to run our guns on reverse (to make kind of a pilot hole) on every screw on the bevels, so when we drove the screws they would countersink. We actually got a large refund from our drywall supplier because of the extra time required because of the hard bevels... |

Re: 25 Gauge Dimpled Metal Studs???
I work mostly on commercial projects and therefore use metal for most of my framing. 25 gauge metal studs are very easy to work with once you get used to working with metal. I also do the drywall hanging and use regular fine thread drywall screws for 25 gauge metal (make sure it is fine thread and not coarse thread.)
They don't call me screw it, for nothing! |
