24" Oc ?

On small room ceiling (10X12' room) if all joist are level can I get away with not "strapping" if I use 1/2" and run perpendicular to joists?

It worked for 20 years but the concensus is 16" oc with 1/2", any thoughts?!

Thanks
John

Re: 24" Oc ?

'Strapping' is meant to evenly distribute floor loads so the joists distribute weight evenly. How is using 1/2 furring perpendicular to the joist going to stop load distribution?

I would just add the strapping--done correctly to code-- and charge what it is worth to you.

Good Luck.

I have alway strapped with 1X4 on 16" oc. I meant in this case just to run the drywall without strapping since the room is small. What aI siad was confusing I think.

I get what you are saying... you just want to lay a drywall ceiling over existing strapped joists--like in a basement. Your method in this case would be fine...

I believe is talking about drywalling a ceiling, and the issues of drywall sag down the road.

Mike, what is "down the road" in years and the there is only 24" original joist, no strapping.

This is a rental house.

Thanks for all replies!

Strapping is kind of a New England thing and not done much in other parts of the country. It's not in the ubc and I don't think it's in the irc.

10x 12... add a couple of 2x4 nailers and make it 12"centers.

You should either use 1/2" ceiling board or 5/8" when attaching to a ceiling with framing that is 24"oc.

Go with 5/8" and call it a day.

Re: 24" Oc ?

Here in NM we typically don't strap 24" OC ceilings and have no problems. Maybe it's a moisture thing. Our humidity is quite low.

5/8 @24" OC just might be a problem. It used to be that the manufacturers required 5/8 to be fastened at 16" OC.

Under the UBC we had to strap the garage ceilings (living space above) if the framing was 24" OC because 5/8 was mandatory. Then IBC dropped the 5/8 requirement so we went with 1/2" and no strapping. Then the local code added the 5/8 requirement but approved 24" OC for it.

My head hurts.

If the current joist are level on the ceiling, using 2X4's between the current joists seems like a great idea, anyone?

Thanks

Re: 24" Oc ?

I'd still just use 1/2" ceiling board. Why waste all the time?

A special stronger kind of drywall made for ceilings so you don't have to worry about whats worrying you. You'll have to get it through a drywall supply yard.

What Mike said, although all the lumber yards here carry it.
