Re: Tv Above Fireplace

It's a norm for small houses with limited space. For big house they prefer its own stand or a big wall entertainment center.

Re: Tv Above Fireplace

I've done a couple recently. They were fake stone fireplaces and the gc's have asked me to just leave out stone the size of the opening needed for the fireplaces.

I mentioned that this will really limit them to the size of TV they will be able to put in there, but thats what they wanted...

Re: Tv Above Fireplace

Just finished one yesterday as a matter of fact. I got a big sreen (the old kind that takes up your whole room) I would love to dump it and get a plasma or lcd over the fireplace. That would make my little living room look huge. Of course this would also mean I would have to get rid of my dolphin I cought in Mexico.

But yes, they are becoming really popular now.

Here's a picture of room makeover I did a few years ago, there is a 2" conduit for the cabling going from a j-box behind the TV to the box in the wall on the right. Done 5 more since then, can't find the photos right now, but all about the same, the TV is over the fireplace.

Re: Tv Above Fireplace

I did two this week, two last week, etc..

This is usually all in new homes with gas insert fireplaces.

It sure does look nice, but it's probably one of the dumbest places you can put a display.

The height of the display and the room depth are the deciding factors for the viewing angle. Most rooms are about 10 feet deep from the fireplace. Sitting down 10 feet away and having to look at something that is at least 6 feet up can lead to uncomfortable neck strain.

I had one guy the other day tell me he wanted his 58" display over his fireplace. 52" mantle, 48" TV height, 5" gap puts the top of the display about 9 FEET up. The room depth was only 12 feet!

Anyways, do your best to discourage this practise and get people to do it on a blank wall. They'll have a much better viewing experience.

Totally agree. It baffles me when I see that stuff. Suppose it works if you are lying on back to watch tv.

Re: Tv Above Fireplace

Not masonry, - - but here's an (electric) fireplace wall I designed and built in about a year ago with a fairly big-screen overtop. Pretty good sized room, though, - - I'd say it was at least about 20' long . . .

Re: Tv Above Fireplace

The primary benefit of TV over FP is room arrangement. It's tough to lay out a room facing different walls.
