Thin Brick Over Painted Concrete
Hey Guys! Been MIA on here for a while...
I'll be installing Robinson Thin Brick over PAINTED sheetrock in a condo. I've done plenty of thin brick, but never over painted sheetrock. Here are my 3 methods that I'm weighing out: Option #1 (BEST): Lathe, scratchcoat, install thinbrick with thinset Option #2 (2nd Best): Install 1/2" CBU over sheetrock, float joints, install thinbrick with thinset. Option #3 (worst, but passable): Sand the crap out of the painted sheetrock, and install thinbrick with modified thinset. Do you guys have any feedback on which one would be best in this application? |

Re: Thin Brick Over Painted Concrete
For thin brick in residential application, sand the ****rock and then trowel on a product such as Parex Base coat 121, then thinset the brick. For commercial work, Either one or 2, but 2 is usually better.

Definitely never heard of that Parex product. Interesting. What purpose does it serve?

Re: Thin Brick Over Painted Concrete
On a similar note, one of my contractors wants me to put up a rough textured plaster on interior walls. On a previous project (not by me) they used regular buff mortar mix over lath to get the effect. Is the lath necessary? Should we use blueboard as a substrate? Primer? Glue in the mix?

Re: Thin Brick Over Painted Concrete
There are products out there to achieve that without lathing. LaHabra Plaster Mix is one, but there are others, both cementious and acrylic.
As a rule, you trowel on the base coat over whatever is there, then apply the finish coat, smooth or rough, from Tuscan to Venetian.
