Stone Veneer Applied To Round Pillars
Hi all,
looking for a few suggestions/opions on an interesting situatuon i've come accross. Just completed a paverwalkway installation for a customer when she asked me to re-do 4 round pillar coulms on the front porch. The two outside colums are 14' x 2' round that stand on 4' of cinder block base and run from the ground to the porch roof. The middle columns are 8 x 2' that stand on 4' of cinder block base and run only from the porch to the porch roof. When I normally install stone veneer I use the normal lathe & scratch coat method into mortar. For this application, i'll have to first frame out the colums to get them square. I'm planning anchoring pt 2 x 4's to the base and framing to square them off. Instead of using the mortar & scratch cost method i was thinking of using durock and thinsetting the veneer directly on. The columns are 80% under the porch and will be protected from a good portion of weather elements, but keep in mind they still are outdoors where anything can happen. Summed all up, my concerns are as follows: 1) Best way of attaching 2 x 4 framing to cinder base? (cinder is brittle and shooting nails won't hold, will anchors be solid enough over time?) 2) durock vs scratch coat for veneer installation? what type of thinset is best for this application? 3) any suggestions of a better way to square off columns other than pt 2 x 4 framing? |

Re: Stone Veneer Applied To Round Pillars
could always lay block up 4" hollows would last forever if the foundation the bottom cinders on is sufficient and in this way could lay stone directly on block with no scratch or wire!
or they make masonry to wood attachments for mainly posts, but can find almost anything at the depot or local hardware. Look into core filling with anchors or use tapcons, which are screwed (the blue ones with hex heads) so as to not hammer into the existing goodluck! |
