Re: Stablia Mason Level

I first saw them in Alberta as a younger lad. Back then a levels longevity was still an issue and the fact that they seemed to be so indestructable was a plus. I eventually bought one, used it, and still remember it as a fine tool. The nice thing about them (again particularly for a young lad) is they're kind of skinny and with fewer sq inches of area there's not much gain to pounding on them.

I'm old now and my levels survive for 25 years but if I had to buy a new one I might just buy a Stabila.

Re: Stablia Mason Level

Johnsons are disposables, Cricks are heirlooms for craftsmen, Stabila are working levels.

Re: Stablia Mason Level

If you do a lot of brick and block the vials on the Stabilia will get full of mortar if you're not careful. I like just about any wood I-beam. Tough and easy to clean.

Re: Stablia Mason Level

I have an couple empires. A bit bulkier but just as good in my opinion. When I find a brick or block that's truly square then I'll worry about a more accurate level and spend extra money. Not that I think mine are any less accurate than a Stabila. They aren't. In the mean time with a cheaper level I'm not as concerned about abuse or theft. As for a wood level the weather gets to them. Any level is only as good as the mason holding it.

I have Smith, Johnson & Empire levels in various lengths. As tkle said " Any level is only as good as the mason holding it"

Re: Stablia Mason Level

A couple levels to avoid are the Mayes brand and the ones made in Israel or at least the ones sold at Home Depot (Hercules or Husky).

Re: Stablia Mason Level

stabilia is not a bad level. but wooden in my opinion is the way to go and none other than Crick. Stabilia has those "nice" guards for wacking them but I think thats just helping the handicapped. Terrible Idea. You might pay 100 bucks for a two foot Crick but take care of it and it will perform for a loooooooong time

I'm more worried about how the job looks than how I look. Wood levels are pretty but they're the past.

I have to agree. As long your work looks great then who gives a crap if its a wood or aluminum level. I just think aluminum belongs to carpentry and wood for masonry. Its all down to a personal feel. But if your going to get wood dont be cheap. Crick just has that nice shape and weight to them.

Re: Stablia Mason Level

I used American levels when I first started laying. When Stabilla came along ,I tried them for two or three years. I had problems with them bowing. At first Stabilla would replace the level , but then changed their policy; according to my supplier. Shortly thereafter, they introduced the mason's level with the "bump pad". I bought a Stabilla mason's level and will never buy another one. While the bump pad is great for beating on; you are left with only one side if the level to work with and the bump pad will not allow you to lay the face of the level flat against the wall to draw plumb lines. The bump pads must be epoxied to the level as they are very difficult to remove. I still have some stabilla levels that I use for carpenter work, but for masonry work I have used Crick for the last 15-20 years.
