Smoke And Mirrors

I was looking through the March issue of Garden Design magazine today. I opened a page that is an add for a manufacturer of imitation stone. It is a close up of the work. The stone is like what we know as Pennsylvania field stone. I was struck that most each stone had a thin crack between the stone and mortar. And a good number of the cracks run stone to stone.

I immediately pulled back and thought why would anyone use this picture. I did some things and then it dawned on me! This is imitation stone the cracks are only imitation and don't mean what they would if this was stacked stone.

As a student of distressed masonry, I did not understand what you said. Does the stone come in sheets, with the mortar joint included and precracked?!

Re: Smoke And Mirrors

Cultured Stone is individual rocks, not sheets. They show a picture of the laid up stone with cracks between the stone and the mortar? What is the name, maybe they will have the same pic online?

I sell and install Eldorado, as well as Cultured Stone, and haven't noticed the picture you are talking about. It could not have been intentional, though. Probably some marketing wonk without a clue.

Re: Smoke And Mirrors

i have made and installed phoney stone since 1977.the only time i have seen a crack in the mortar is when i have grouted up againest wood trim, and a haor line crack forms from shrinkage.
if the stone is installed right, there should be a bond as good as real stone or brick.no cracks or holes.

You photos are just as enigmatic as the original post. I am no less confused than I was before you posted them.

If the pic looked too good the customer would be disappointed.

After all what do you expect to happen when it is attached to a moving wooden framed wall. If it is applied to masonry wall very few to no cracks however.

not a fan of cultured stoned but gotta do what pays. ha

Re: Smoke And Mirrors

I looked through some of their lit. at work today, and there are many pictures showing cracks like that. No big deal, so long as it is over a scratch coat or hardi-plank, and 99% of the populace would not notice it. I will add that when I build or supply mock-ups or sample panels, I do not do my best work or provide pristine materials.
