Saws Or Stonehammers Is The Question

Just wondering what you guys are using on the jobsite.
Saws or Stonehammers.

I was taught with stonehammers a long time ago. I am passing this trade forward.

Re: Saws Or Stonehammers Is The Question

We use saws for must to the cuts but also use stone hammers as well. What ever is better for the cut you need to make. With the saws we go through alot of blades but make up for the price in labor costs, plus some.

I think most masons utilize both tools. It pays to be efficient with a saw and a hammer. They both have there strongpoints and pertinent applications. Sometimes I will use a hammer AND a chisel.

I saw a stone guy doing something with the biggest oxy/acetylene blowtorch I've ever seen in my life. Made his saw cut go away, but splattered hot stone pieces all over the place like popcorn going off. Was this guys nuts or is this a known process?

I use a torch and water after cutting bluestone slabs, for caps and treads. It gives it the look of being split with a guillotine (factory finish). If you wet the edge and slowly heat it with a torch the edge will split leaving a nice edge.

6string, what kind of stone were you splitting?
BTW we use hammer and chisel the most, but we use stone hammers and saws as well.

Re: Saws Or Stonehammers Is The Question

you have to use a saw and a brick hammer if your talking about production when blocking a building getting the block up is faster with a brick hammer let the saw cut the difficult parts why wait on a cut unless your doing finnish work cant beat a good saw why risk damaging the product

Re: Saws Or Stonehammers Is The Question

We use 4lb stonehammers, Ts 400 saws and a new 50 ton stone splitter I've recently bought that's made in tennesee. The one shown in the picture is the 30 ton version, mine has bigger cylinders and 20hp motor with 1/2 thick table. The 50 ton splitter cost a 11,000 dollars. My Christmas present and bonus for the year.

Google "jetstick flaming tool"

Know a few granite sculptor's who use it as their primary carving tool.

Me--I've got 8 or 9 pneumatic carving hammers of different sizes along with a couple of hundred chisels, short handle hammers from about a half pound up to 4 pounds, and probably even a 24 oz brick hammer laying around the shop somewhere. Then there is the 4 lb bush hammer, no longer needed.

The JET STIK, with its 5000 feet per second (1500 meters per second) velocity flame, is unsurpassed in giving you the control, speed, and versatility you need when surfacing, carving, and texturing stone.
Whether you are working with granite, sandstone, bluestone, dolomitic limestone, or quartzite, the JET STIK will open up a world of new opportunities for you. It is truly the ultimate stoneworking flame tool.

Around 2k or a bit above for a good splitter.

They say not to cut field stone with them though. You'll ruin the unit.

Im laying some granite field stone right now on a fireplace and tried chiseling a piece off to get it to fit... 3 hits with my 5lb stone hammer and chisel and knew it was a useless effort lol.
