NIce! Like the arch. How do you build that? Are there temporary forms in place to hold it as it is being built?

Mike,

You got it! Here's me and an arch from '05. The thing that amazes me is that you can remove the wooden buck almost as soon as you have laid the final brick even though the mortar is still wet. I guess thats why arches were used in medievel architecture so much...they are incredibly strong and self supporting.

Pretty cool.

Another question for you - so the bricks that make up the arch they look like they have all been cut in order to be thinner in the inside dimension of the arch and wider on the outside dimension.

You cut these with a wet saw or something, and more importantly what is the procedure for doing this fast? Do you cut them all at the same time then install them or cut a few at a time? Is it just by eye, a formula?

Very nice walls!! I am not a mason but I don't think they cut each brick in that radius. I think it's done with the mud joint, but I too am curious for the answer.

Re: Recent Wall Pics

The cuts are just made on a brick saw and they are quite easy. I believe on that arch i just cut the brick 1/4" to nothing the long side of the brick. After doing it a few times you just eyeball it.

The cuts allow for Straight joints.

Thats exactly how I do it. Most masons up here dont shave their brick when building an arch. What you end up with is a hog joint on the outer radius and a skinny 1/8" joint on the inner radius. It makes it look like crap in my opinion. Always shave the brick.

I would love to be able to get work like that up here Luka. Instead I get the same crap everytime. Cultured stone front or brick with minimal decorative work. Very nice looking work again!

1/4 to nothing VS hogged joints is the difference between work and craftmanship, Salute!
