Question

Question, Stone Veneer

conditions as follows, see photos please
1-slate veneer with mesh backer
2- 36" high around perimeter of house
3- install over 3/4" cdx
install procedure i would like to use
1- 30lb felt paper over cdx ply
2- plastic drainage roll stapled over felt
3- cement board nailed over drainage mat
4- thinset directly to cement board
QUESTION i have heard alot of conflicting opinions, manufacturers of stone veneer, and masons have said the best way is 30lb felt, plastic drainage mat, nail diamond lath, scratch coat, thinset veneer to scratch coat.
i will install the best way available, i would just like to understand why i am using one technique over another, thankyou, Gene

Re: Question, Stone Veneer

The lath and scratch coat is cheaper and in my opinion gives a better bonding surface. I use the board inside when I want to keep the mess to a minimum.

Re: Question, Stone Veneer

There are several manufacturers of your stone. Some of the backing will come off when it is cut. If the backing is holding your pieces together it falls apart. The preferred method is when the stones are epoxied together. Open and check all boxes for breakage.

Re: Question, Stone Veneer

I don't think anyone really knows the right answer. This kind of thing is kind of a bastardized technique that's halfway between tilesetting and stonework, but not truly either one. That said, it's great that you are using a drain board behind it. Just make sure that your flashing details are correct at the top of your stone, and especially under windows. Make sure your weep areas are clear (and remain clear) as well. Your other option is to use a tile product like Schluter's Kerdi behind the stone, and tie it into your upper drainage planes.

Re: Question, Stone Veneer

If you use cement board (taping the joints), then thinset to set the stone, anything else is a waste of time and money. I would ask why the plywood and the roofing felt?

4" in a perfect world. Most of the time the architect says 4" stone veneer, but all the strip veneer is 5"-6" thick. It's to the point now that I won't do a true stone veneer with less than a 5" shelf.

Re: Question, Stone Veneer

Up here in WI we just put our felt over the plywood and housewrap.

Then attach the lathe and scratch it. I've never used the drainage mat, or heard of anyone up here using it.
