Punch A Hole In Concrete /w #2

hi guys,

I have a poured wall that I need to punch a 2" hole in, so I can slip 1.5" pvc pipe through it... I know there is #2 steel in the wall.

what type of bit do you guys suggest. I don't want to use my core drill bc, it will take forever & the steel also will be a pain. (not to mention I don't want to bolt the rig vertical to wall or kill my shoulders)

I think ill buy a 2" rotary hammer core bit & when steel is exposed I'll just bend it w a chipping gun.

any quicker ideas. I don't care about hole appearance or spalling bc it will be resurfaced anyway......

How about a series of 1/2" OR 5/8" holes in a circular pattern the size you need, that way you will know where the rebar is and you can chip it out easier, and don't have to but a new bit, or at least an expensive 2" bit.

For highrise work we have used a dry-core Hilti bit to clear the concrete down to the bar, and then chipped the concrete beneath the bar to expose it, and used an oxy acetylene torch to get the bar out of the way, and then finished the penetration with the dry core bit.

mine doesn't have to be so pretty..I wasn't planning on having to do this & just want the fastest hole I can get.

I like your method minus the torch....
fireguy's seems labor intensive, but I'm not looking for the steel.. if I hit the grid so be it....(out comes the chipping gun.)

what kind of dry bit? rotary hammer? I'm leaning to using rotary hammer, bc I don't care if pretty. & 2" is plenty to slip a 1.5" pipe through.

core will take forever????
I see the bosh diamond rotary core bits w pilot bit, anyone use them....

appreciatively

Re: Punch A Hole In Concrete /w #2

My regular hammer drill does up to a 2" regular bit. I have a 2", 4-cutter spline drive bit for my hammer drill, and I know it will plow through #2 with no problem. I know you could go through 4" of concrete with a piece of #2 in the middle in less than a minute, because I've done so many times. The most trouble is fighting the clutch on the drill when you start to hack out that little rebar.

I dry core into rebar sometimes, but I hate to. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, in which case you charge the job for the core bit. You'll generally lose 2 or 3 teeth when you dry core through a rebar. Not such a big deal if you realize this ahead of time, and have the replacement cost built in.

I use a Hilti TE-76 ATC with a Hilti 2" dry core bit in it, it works well, and if you want to spend the time it will go through steel, but it will kill a $200.00 bit. I gave up on Bosch products for drilling concrete years ago, they just don't compare with the performance I get from Hilti.
